Amazon Kindle

This is all very fascinating to me. I didn't even know these things existed. The Sony looks very nice. I Love reading my
books, but the older I get, and the more decrepit my neck becomes, the harder it is for me to hold a book in a easy chair, or while lying in bed. Thanks for all the info! :)

Oh damn, the Sony Reader uses Linux? I'm sold (of course, when I get some money and stop spending it on cigars :D)

IIRC, although the Sony Reader does not have wireless downloading like the Kindle (and the Nook?), you aren't forced to buy books only through specified channels; instead, you can just transfer over PDFs and other files which could also be useful for non-publication documents (and ebooks you obtain through alternate sources). This alone is perhaps the single most important factor to me because I don't want to only be able to read what I can buy through Amazon.

Just a little bumpitybump to say that I finally received my B&N nook last week and I'm lovin' it. I've finished one book and I'm 2/3rds into another. One small dislike is that I wish they'd made the case in a matte finish. The shiny plastic can cause some mildly distracting reflections at certain angles.

With that said, if you're interested in an e-reader but don't have to have it, like, right-pee-yer-pants-now, you may want to wait a few months. Mirasol Displays has hinted that their spiffy new color display technology might be incorporated into the next generation Kindle. It boasts low energy consumption like current e-Ink screens but with fast refresh (video capable) full color. It looks awesome, if it works out. Interferometric modulation is an elegant solution.

While up in SA for 12th Night, I got a chance to look at the Sony Pocket Edition Reader my shield brother's wife got him for Yule.

Total sweeeeeeet. With the leather cover on, you hold it just like a standard paperback book. It's about the same size and weight and not as thick. Screen readability was excellent and it scaled up text size to "old fart" easily and without losing any clarity. Nice.

'Bout half the price of the larger models, too.

I have a Kindle and I love it. I got my wife a Sony reader last christmas because she plows through books (crap romance novels) and they end up everywhere. I got her an 8g stick for it because in the first month she ate up the internal memory. They are both great but I like the Kindle over the Sony just because I don't have to hook it up to the computer to download books.

Well, I missed Christmas because she decided she wanted to wait until the iPad came out to see what it was going to be all about. She's not looking for something that complex, but the color would be nice as one of her journals that is available has many diagrams and stuff like that that are in color.

In the interim, I've discovered we have no 3G up here, so that capability is a non issue for us. I guess we're going to start looking heavily at the color units and see what we can find. She'd also like something that isn't white or stainless looking, so that may be a challenge.

I want to thank you all for the good discussion and info. It's been helpful.

She might also consider the customizing options available for whatever she winds up getting, if she's not crazy about the color. For instance, the nook is customizable with a variety of backs, frames, and skins. Then there are third party options available, such as, DecalGirl and Amazon. Me, I went with the Bleeker cover in the appropriate color of Tobacco, natch.

TheWife(c) on this end has been talking about a Kindle too. The one thing she doesn't like is that while it will display a PDF file it won't enlarge it to be easier to read. She has a few hundred books in PDF form already and that is a serious drawback to her.

TheWife(c) has gotten into her head that she wants one of these devices. Does anyone here use one or a similar device for reading? How do you like it?

I just don't see how reading a "book" on one of these is the same as reading an actual book, but hey, I'm old fashioned like that I guess.

Maybe the larger Kindle DX would be better for her then? Or does she still want the smaller form factor?
