Alaska herf?

Let Matt use the immersion suit and throw him in. You could even pull pull him with the boat and see if you can make him hydroplane across the bay.

You said the magic words: fishing and herfing :) I will give this a serious thought for sure! Flyfishing for salmon will be my first choice but I can be swayed to to jig for doormats ;)

Best,

Joe

Jon, I may have been outside for too long, but I can guarantee your puker ass will be wet before mine.

Wow... lets hear it for drunk posting! I don't even remember posting this last night... 10:46pm and I was well into my second growler of single hop IPA! Funny thing is, I thought I stayed out at the firepit. Or at least it woul seem so since all the wood is gone.

But.... it's been tossed around, and would be a lot of fun. Just would need a lot of notification for y'all as a trip up here is not your average trip. 'course, nothing is stopping anyone from just coming up to go fishing either :whistling:

(And Phil... what happens on the Baroo stays on the Baroo :0)

If you can get the former Governor of Alaska on the boat, in a bikini, to serve us drinks, I'm in.

no way, no how is that quitter allowed on my boat.
Do you remember the phone conversation we had for about an hour? It was started at the early stages of the fire pit ... I'm guessing that conversation is where this post came from.

Note to self: Remember to purchase plenty of growlers when visiting Swissy, and then raid his cigar stash! :D

I am right there with you on this one, Joe. If you need some extra fly rod fire power then just let me know!

Geez... you guys act like I'm a drunk!

I remember every phone call, every conversation - they were all done within the FIRST growler of IPA. Its just the missing firewood that has me perplexed!

And who says you have to have an organized herf to come up? :whistling:

PS... Good GOD HillyBilly?!?!?!? Where ya been??

Careful, Swissy will try to slip you the moose knuckle.

Are strangers from NC allowed? I'm ready for a trip to Alaska

Hi Erick!!!! nice to see you post. Hope all is well by you and yours :)

Well... depends. Herfing = anytime. As far as fishing, well - what do you wanna catch? King salmon are more late May thru June (elusive fish, no promises), Red salmon are July (not from my boat as much), and Silvers are August/Sept. Halibut are all summer, with later June and July being best. We can't start crabbing until July 15th, but Shrimping starts April 15th (in Whittier, close to home). I can only really accommodate 5 others on the boat realistically for fishing, so any kind of organized herf we might do well charting a big boat if a lot of folks show up. I have guys I work that are big time into drift fishing down the Kenai River (world famous salmon river) so I can arrange fly or bait trips down that for salmon - Kings, Reds and Silvers, all the same timeframes listed above.

So, basically in a nutshell - there is something to be caught from Mid April all the way into late Sept. Best weather is in late May and June, altho this year there was no best weather...we set a record for most consecutive days with precipitation - 32!

So whatever woks for the individual is good.... I'll think about the herfing thing and see what comes up

Looks like I might be up there again in the next couple weeks for work Jim, I'll keep you posted.

Though Jim is telling you HERFing is doable any time, I don't recommend December! Still had a great time despite freezing my balls off though.

Alaska Has always been one of my dream destinations for fishing. Down here I go on long range trips out of San Diego for Tuna/wahoo. Or I go on some friends boats to the loacal banks/islands for some yellowtail/White Seabass/ Tuna/ Dorado.(going this friday) Always wanted to tie into one of those monster Lings in AK for some C &R and of course some of those great Halibut. Caught Plenty of California Halibut up to 40lbs but those monsters up there make dreams happen. Just wondering what kind of boat do you run up there?

Actually, I only target 'buts up to 60# so you're doing fine with CA 40 pounders. The bigger they are, the worse the taste. I only have a 24' day fishing boat - nothing fancy. Some pics on my photobucket site show it some...

Some Nice Pics. Love those shrimp. Wish we could shrimp down here but the regulations do not really allow it. You can shrimp but with the equipment they let you use you might as well not even bother. Lobster season is about to start there in the next couple of days. Looking forward to the season.

I'm bumping this because I'll be in Alaska again this summer. This time I'll be floating about the Gulf of Alaska instead of the Aleutians, but will likely fly through Anchorage. I'll probably stay a little bit afterwards as well.
