My son and i will be attending the May 18th event in KC, the one with dinner with Mr. Jorge Padron. My question is, now that i have two titanium knees, do i need documentation from my doctor,or will the wand suffice. I hate to miss this event just because of paperwork. Thanks!

Claudio - I had spinal fusion surgery and have two large plates / six screws in my neck. I don't even make the detector blink. My understanding is that non-ferrous metals like Ti won't set off the detector.

Even if it does, if you explain what's up, they will wand you and all should be well.

No worries, IMHO......

Good luck, my friend - B.B.S.

Thank you Tom, I really don't like going through the whole procedure as it is now, setting off the sirens would really mess up my day.

...no sirens anymore; now they have camo clad ninjas that swiftly and quietly attack without warning....

Enjoy the Padron event; sure wish I could have made it......

Take care - B.B.S.

When you get to security and they say remove your shoes, just strip naked and walk through.

Ask a silly question, blah, blah, blah. I hope to meet a lot of botls from CP on the 18th.

No offense, Tom, but that can't be right. Ferrous metals are zingers for the magnatometer. However, they'd BETTER be using some technology to detect non-ferrous. What's to stop Ahab from bringing on a titanium box cutter?

Sack, don't be shocked to be taken to a private room and strip searched, maybe even a cavity check. Oh, and don't giggle when they pat your private area.

Joe, at one point in my youth, one of those little composite blades would not have slowed me down. At the twilight of 49, I'm probably a bit slower, but I'd still take em on. Its a disturbing report, nevertheless.

Its better to be on the safe side than be on the wrong side. Paperwork doesn't take much room. I had the displeasure of going through the machine that detects bomb stuff in Las Vegas and in my medical condition, it sucked real bad. I saw at least 2k people make it through the normal lines to just 15 people in front of me in the messed up line. Be prepared...trust me on this.

No offense taken, Bruce, but since my surgery five years ago, I've flown a bunch of times and the detector doesn't even blink. Not once.

I know for a fact my plates and screws are titanium ($$$$). I've seen the X-rays and my "internal hardware" isn't trivial......kinda surprising to me the first time I saw it, actually.

Have you ever seen a metal detector that detects non-ferrous metals...?? I sure haven't......??

Regards - B.B.S.

Bruce - No offense meant brother. I was referring to the options available to the bad guys (and also to those folks that like to board the plane with a little "backup insurance" against any inflight emergency....).

I travel alot with my mother (also my dependant and she lives with me) who, after a severe car accident, has had two spinal surgeries, two vertebre removed, four fused and two titanium cages with screwes and the lot. Most airport and other security screening systems have never made a fuss, but we always travel with documents and even carry a copy of the x-ray when flying internationally. The scanners in Osaka were set off by the surgical hardware and documentation was required. I beleive it's a sensitivity thing (different sensors, different sensitivity levels or calibrated differently).

Realistically, we needed documentation once in 5 years of travel withing four countries and a dozen states, but do you really want to risk this being the one time you might need it?

Just my 20 Yen.

I have a ton of Titanium in my right arm after my motorcycle accident a couple years ago! I also travel a hell of allot, and they have never gong off once. I don't worry about it anymore.

Of course YMMV!!! :D

I have about half a pound of stainless steel on me at any one time, in four different places. I have yet to set off an alarm, and I fly around 40 times a year.

I have a titanium rod down the center of my femur (~2' long) and a couple screws, and have never had a problem. I've even been through them in many other countries around the world and never had a problem there either. I guess the bad guy can just shove something far enough up his ass that it won't set anything off...

Good discussion, guys. I only fly a few times a year, but am competing for a job (same company) that would have me on a flying trip mostly once a week.

Well, just to be the contrarian...

I have a 2 or 3 stainless steel screws in my left knee. I've had them for years and pretty much forget about them until I have to go through one of these things.
I set off the detectors regularly at the Justice Center when I have to use the public entrances, and I've set off the one at the Jail the few times I've had to go through it as well. A quick pass with the wand sorts it all out.

It really is just a matter of how sensitive the things are set, and when they were last calibrated.
The longer they go between calibrations the less sensitive they become, or so I've been told.

Good metal detectors will pick up stuff without any metal in them also.
The security guys at the JC have had to scold off-duty officers for bringing in their Glock branded combat-ware knives.
No metal in them, but they get spotted anyway.

So, YMMV indeed, but I'd take the paper work with me just to be safe.

Having said that of course I won't be taking mine when I go to Vegas next week, so... y'know...
