Awhile back, a certain FOG, Rconectn, and I engaged in a trade that went very well. I sent my end, he sent his, and all was well in CP Land. During our trade, MR. Rconectn mentioned that, like me, he was tired of all the new cigars coming to market that seem to concentrate on monster ring gauges, and are being made so strong that they knock you down, instead of just being made in a size that doesn't wear out your jaw while smoking them, and are blended in a way that just lets you enjoy the taste of the tobacco without having to make sure you have a safe landing place when the power kicks in.
At this point, he recommends that I try the new release from AVO the 787. Creamy smooth, buttery flavor, clouds of smoke, and enough of a punch to let you know you're smoking a very good cigar, but not so strong that you're left in a nicotine haze. Beware, this man can sell!! So acting upon his recommendation, I went searching for this cigar. A B&M in a nearby city had just got a couple of boxes in stock, so I drove over, bought one and smoked it while chatting with the owner. As I got to the end of this great cigar, I jokingly asked him if he had a "roach clip" so I could get the last little bit out of my new found favorite cigar. After giving me that "look", he pointed to his humidor, and suggested I might want to buy another one for later. He then mentioned that he was having the Davidoff rep in his store in a few days, and they would be featuring AVO products, with discounts on box purchases, but he wasn't sure if there would be any additional 787's.
So I head home with a couple 787's in hand, and decide to PM the devious Rconectn, and let him know that, not only was he dead on the money about the 787, but perhaps there was an opportunity to get a box of them at a show discounted price. In retrospect, I can see I was being set up for the kill, but couldn't see it at the time. My new "friend" suggests that maybe we could do a box split, or that he would be up for a full box if enough were available. "Gosh, what a great place CP is, and what a great bunch of BOTL's I've met", was all I could think, big mistake!!
Went to the show which was very informative. The Davidoff rep was very knowledgeable and more than willing to talk about the entire line of AVO's, and even gave me a Domaine for just chatting with him a bit. I was then lucky enough to score a box of the 787 robustos at a nice discount. Even though it was one of the only boxes he was able to bring, due to the demand. For those of you who aren't familiar with this smoke, and this is straight from the rep, the 787 is the identical blend to the AVO 22 which was released a couple years ago, as a limited edition cigar that was never to be made again. Of course, everyone loved it, so their genius marketing department decided they could release a "new" cigar, and the 787 was born. To quote the rep, "7+8+7=22, there are 22 cigars in every box, could we have made it anymore obvious?".
Back home, I PM Rconectn and let him know the good news, and we agree that I'll wait until the 1st of the week to mail him his smokes, so they can rest a bit over the weekend, and he'll send me a check for his share. Out the door go his smokes, PM him with a DC#, and talk about how good these cigars might get with some age on them, but not sure if I can keep away from them long enough to let any aging take place. He PM's back something to the tune of, "Patience grasshopper, they will improve mightily, just give them time!", or some such nonsense.
Get home today from an absolute bitch of a day at work, to find my wife and dogs visibly shaken, and all she would do is point to a large box on the kitchen counter mumbling about it won't stop moving!
The moral of this story is, DO NOT trust Rconectn on a box split!! He does not play fair!! He sends the agreed upon amount, and some smokes that Avo Uvezian would love to see, again!!
Christian, you went way over the top, my friend, and, hopefully, someday soon we can get together and enjoy a cigar or two together!!
