I'm looking to get a winter truck.

I know I'll have to put some work into it, but I want to buy one for under 2K.

I have a 44mile commute and only need it for the really snowy days.

Any other suggestions?

Oh yea...I'm considering a 4x4 pickup as well....and I had a 88 Ramcharger already.

Thanks.

I had a '79 Land Cruiser that kicked ass in the snow. Probably can't find one for under $1k, but they're worth every penny. I wish I still had mine.

Those old scouts are cool as hell, but they are hard to find around here.

There is not a decent 4x4 out there that's going to get good mileage for under $5k let alone $1k, especially in the winter cold. I wouldn't sweat that part of it.

Good luck!

I wouldn't waste my time on rust. How about a jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. A little lighter but less rust. The Grand Cherokee will get around 13 MPG. My Liberty gets 18 average. It's going to be hard to get any non SUV 4x4 for around $2K. A s10 blazer, bronco or other SUZ with high miles should be around $2 and better mileage. Perhaps a Dodge Dakota or S10 4x4.

I realize it isn't what you're looking for, but my '88 camry with AWD and studded tires is unstoppable in the snow (they don't plow the road I live on and it drifts like crazy). Also gets ~28 mpg.

I worked with a guy in north central Iowa who had about 4 or 5 Scouts from the early '70s. He obviously loved them and he got around quite well in winter. I would say traction and dependability would far outweigh the hit on mileage you're obviously going to take. Good luck with whatever you buy.

While I've always loved Scouts, I'd bet it is much easier to come across parts for Broncos.

The Scout is very cool, but parts will be a huge issue. I'd go with the '79 Bronco. Thanks to my dad's meticulous upkeep my mom STILL drives the '79 Bronco that my folks bought new. It's a beast in bad weather too-- it's handled 27 Wyoming winters with no problems whatsoever.

If I can fit, he can! Plus it's a chick magnet!

Being a Ford guy i'm going to have to say the Bronco. Eveyone before has it about right, they will be easier to find parts for than the Scout, however my Uncle swore by the Scouts for about 25 years he just had to always have one.
