Fifty years ago today, Matel released one hell of a woman. She has been a trend setter ever since.

Isn't there a real life barbie they modeled the doll after? If so, is it to scale and if so, really??

My wife had a whole bunch of original Barbies when they first came out. One day without her knowing, her mother gave them all away to a younger cousin. She's been pissed ever since.

She started collecting them again and has quite a few.

Thanks Matt!

My older sister collects those designer gown ones, the Bob Mackies and such. And Barbie Christmas stuff---she does about five trees every Yule, and the one in her bedroom is pink with a Barbie theme.

I found this:

That first swim-suited fashion model had measurements the equivalent of 39-18-33. (Two actresses who came close to those proportions were Jayne Mansfield (40-21-36) and Sophia Loren (38-24-38), though both were obviously a lot hippier.)

Nowadays, any contestant on Rock of Love or any similiar ilk could probably make the claim, but in an age before silicone these two women should be applauded.
