Anyone using one of the Costco 153qt coolers for a coolidor? I'm talking about the one with the quick access lid within the main lid? I'm wondering if this extra lid might not be a problem for RH stability? I'm looking at upgrading my current 100qt cooler since I seem to, um... be trying to overstuff it.

Go ahead, yuk it up! Newbies, take note... start BIG on the cooler! If people here would just stop offering great deals and such I wouldn't have this problem (on second thought, keep the offers coming! you know who you are... ) and DAMN C-BID!

or since the lid would be in line with a rack, does it make for a nice way to grab singles without opening the main door?

thoughts/expirences from those with this cooler would be greatly appreciated!

That is my next step up. Stand it up like a fridge, put shelf on top part and only use that little door for singles. Store all your boxes below. Theres a picture of a nice one floating around.

Swissy - I have some very thin neoprene foam tape that I'd bet would enhance the seal just fine should it be an issue. I'll be at the local Costco this Thursday night and I'll take another look.

...upgraded to a 50 Qt. Coleman last week; 2/3 full already. Can't keep from looking at the Staebell & Associates temperature controlled humis. Figured out where to put one in my home that I and the better half can live with. Will probably have the required investment in about eight months. The wife says; "...if you can afford it and really want one...get it."

I'm afraid the writing is on the wall....... :whistling:

I have that cooler and it has been dead stable since I first filled it up and put a box of beads in it. Don't worry about the little door. :)

Thx....
I thought it might not be an issue, but wanted to check. thanks psyktek for the info. Can't believe i've turning into such a cigar whore! Never thought I'd have to worry about going bigger than 100qt I have now! :whistling: someone keeps PM'ing me with a 'cooler clearance' deal I can't pass on! (who shall remain nameless...)

And BBS... careful- that's the same thing my wife said about the boat purchase... I still am in shock (but planning on taking full advantage of it!) Hey- wonder if S&A has a HEATED humidor? :p

A guess - solid state coolers (usually Peltier junctions) cool with DC applied one way, and heat with it applied the other. Not sure if theirs do, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Hey Swissy - want me to find out for you....???.... :p

I've got one of those as well. I've NEVER had a humidification problem so don't worry about it.

I guess I don't understand why so many of you guys go with coolidors. I understand they get the job done, by being cheap and a ginormous space to store cigars but they aren't much to look at. I am not judging you guys or calling you cheap, don't get me wrong, but I just thought one of the cooler things about cigar smoking is a sweet looking home for your 10-20 dollar cigars.

Do you guys usually have a secondary desktop humidor or a small cabinet inside the house or are you ok with just having a coolidor?

That is a sweet looking coolerdor. The one I saw was White, it had a light and a small computer fan inside. That one by Vern is really nice though.

Not everyone wants to spend thousands of dollars on a display type humidor when that money could be spent on your cigar collection. I for one would rather see a decent looking coolerdor stuffed with high dollar cigars than a high dollar humidor stuffed with lower priced crap! :p I for one keep my "stash" in a coolerdor stored in individual tupperdors and have a smaller desktop humidor for cigars that i plan on smoking in the next few weeks or so.

The pic of the coolerdor in the link above is a VERY sweet setup and i wouldnt cringe for a second to see that in my "smoke" room!

Are you kidding, I want that in my room. Need the directions to build one of those badboys LOL! :D

Good question - simple answers.

I currently have a nice desktop humi, and the cooler previously mentioned.

Our home here in the PacNW doesn't have AC. Not uncommon, as it's really doesn't get "that hot" around these parts, and usually always cools off at night. Our home is really well insulated, but still gets warm a few weeks out of the year. When it's above 80+ outside, it can get mid-high 70's inside late in the day so the coolerdor and the desktop head for an inside closet on the ground floor where it never gets above 70 degrees, no matter if it's 100+ outside. When it's not that hot outside, the desktop goes, well, on my desktop and the cooler heads for an unused bedroom closet where it sits undisturbed at a steady 68-70 degrees.

I thought seriously about a temperature controlled cabinet style humi, but they are rather expensive and you sure lose some storage capacity due to the added insulation / cooling hardware. My wife and I finally decided to upgrade the cooling system in the house next year, then I have the "green light" to buy any cabinet I want. Got to love that girl....

As other guys have pointed out, the only thing a cabinet does better than a cooler is look good. CoolerDor's rock for stable, steady cigar storage on the cheap.

I just bought that cooler from Costco and it works great. I keep it and a 70 qt cooler in my guest shower that nobody ever uses. And of course you can see my display humidor by clicking the link at the bottom of this post. I like to keep all the premium "show off, Look at Me, Look at Me!" cigars in my display humidor so I can stare at them while I smoke. The cheaper smokes and repeat boxes go into my coolers.
