"Cannon on land , gun on ship"
How do explain a 30mm cannon on an aircraft? Or the 105mm howitzer on Puff?
A cannon is an intermediate-sized gun, usually 20mm to 40mm in bore diameter. Cannon are included in the small arms category but are usually vehicle-borne, rather than person-carried. Linky

True too.
Prespective is key. NAVAL jargon is always gun on ship, cannon on ground. I got it wrong first try too.
Land=105mm cannon/howitzer
Naval= 6 inch gun
Both similar weapons, just differnt jargon
The Corps had a 106mm recoiless rifle until about 1978. I won't even get into flack cannons
