What smoking music are you listening to? (2024)

If you were weird enough in 1966 you bought the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Think if Monty Python was a musical act instead of a theatrical one. They made almost no impact in the US but were well known in the UK. I don't think they ever had a top 100 song they did had songs that were influential beyond their popularity. One effect they had in the US was Trouser Press Magazine named after "Do The Trouser Press" song from their 1972 album "The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse"

I found them via "The Intro to the Outro" song in 1967 while scanning the dial one night. One listen and I had to buy the album.

Prog Fiday

801

A group of former members of Roxy Music, Curved Air and other English groups. Originally a one-off group who played 3 live gigs in '76. These were combined into the album 801 Live which came out in the middle of English punk and did surprisingly well. ( I still might have my cassette in a box somewhere)before deciding to become a real band. This live album also change how almost all live albums were recorded. Instead if the mix from the soundboard going to the mobile studio 801 sent a dual feed. One to the mixing board to produce the best sound for that venue and a second untouched feed to the mobile studio where everything could be taped and later mixed for the best sound on a record.

While they only put out one other album - Listen Now - in '77 all three of the original live shows have been released over the years.

The song that hooked me

I was at this show in Vegas a couple of weeks ago. The audio isn't great on this video, but it's one of my favorite BBS songs. The guy on the second row on the right side of the stage holding up a beer at the end of the song is me.

John Lennon & Yoko Ono: Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins

Not a fan at all of what was on the record nor the cover even as a teenager when it came out.
