Lately some have been speculating that the Chavito/CUC might be put back parallel to the US Dollar. However, Raul in a recent newspaper article stated that the 20% that is garnished from the USD is used to subsidize those unfortunate that don't receive remittances from Miami. At this point I suppose a kick in the nads would be asking too much. John
 
Raul is adding a vig to the money people send from the states to pay for those that don't have family here. In other words socialism to the end, take from the haves to give to the have nots.
 
It's all fantasy money anyway, the CUC is linked but the normal convertible peso goes nowhere for those people. Every US dollar is turned into a CUC and then placed in the national coffers to be spent by the Castro administration.

The Russians were the same way back when they had two rubles.

I used to think it was bad news the way that operated but after reading the Generacion Y blog regularly, I'm stunned at some of the conversion rates and what it costs them for basics like milk and beef (If they can even get it).
 
FYI guys last time I went to Cuba (2 years ago) they wouldn't even take usd anymore. I had to take Canadian dollars with me to make the exchange to CUC there....People in cuba would sell me their usd for CUC because they couldn't do the exchange there.....

They took USD last time I was there about a year ago. The only thing I saw the people trying to exchange with me was Canadian coins because they can't convert them there.
 
Starting June 1-December 1 there will be scheduled power outages (Brown Outs):

8-10 am
2-4 pm
8-12 pm

Not sure if is by sector or the whole country. Obviously big hotels will be exempt, many businesses will also be on reduced electricity. Finding a cold beer will be a task. That 8-12 pm will be a party for the mosquitos. John
