NEW policy for purchases of tobacco with Mastercard

I was just informed that Mastercard will be initiating a new policy prohibiting tobacco purchases with their card. I was told by a manufacturer that they received notice from MC that by the 1st of the year, or a little after, they will no longer allow charges for tobacco products OR accessories. Just thought everyone might want to be aware of this.

What kind of crap is that? How do they have the right to ban their customers form buying a legal product with their card? ??? :angry:
 
Not sure how the folks at Mastercard came to suck a sound business idea in these times of economic turbulence. ???

I mean, don't tobacco purchases acrue interest at the same rate as any other purchase?
 
here's my take. States are wanting to track tobacco purchases from out of state. I am assuming that MC wants no part of it, so they decided to ban these purchases altogether. They've been coming at the tobacco industry for a while now, so this is no surprise. This just means get an AMEX, VISA, or DISCOVER.
 
It looks like old news - LINKY...unless you have an updated linky...or mail from Master-Card.

From the looks of it...you can buy tobacco...just from a B&M.

Now, some B&M's may take your info and process it at their instore terminal. :thumbs:

Actually, the manufacturer that I spoke to received this letter from MC on Friday, and just read it to me a little while ago. It's supposed to take effect no later than a week after the new year, although it might go into effect on the 1st.

I'm glad I use VISA.

It's hard to believe that Master Card is trying to discourage business right now...
 
Looks like MasterCard is trying to cover their ass should a class action lawsuit to recover state tobacco taxes go down. More info here.

Goodbye, MasterCard. I'm canceling today and telling them why.
