SAMSUNG ToC 52" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV w/ DNIe - LN52A650

I want to get a new TV for the living room too. has to be atleast 52". let me know what you find out.

I would check deal sites everyday until you see something good. You will save yourself a couple hundred bucks if you can wait it out and find a good deal. They have TV's on deal sites pretty frequently.
Try woot.com and slickdeals.net for a start. I know their are others, but those are the only i check everyday.

Have you compared Plasma and LCD side by side with the same input? Bring a movie you like and know what the colors are supposed to look like to the store to do the comparison.

Also, do you need a TV or simply a monitor? Some of the commercial plasmas and LCDs don't have tuners and are significantly less expensive.

Got it! Love it!

I went with that Samsung due to several rave reviews from friends/family that have the brand. Liked the picture quality next to all of the other displays, second to the Sony TV's for a lot less money.

The salesman veered me away from the Plasma by stating that Plasma TV's can sometimes leak out the gas causing them to go bad. Especially if you have temp fluctuations in the room they will be in. We have a wood stove that we use quite frequently in the family room, so I ruled that out for us. Sure you can buy an extended warranty, but the idea is to never have to go through the hassle of using it.

Any opinions or other suggestions?

Yea...I'm redoing the living room! :D

That's a great TV -- the LG TVs are also fantastic. Consumer Reports recently rated both models at the top of the list.

Here's a PDF of the LCD TV ratings page from Consumer Reports:

I have the 52" LG TV (might be 60", not sure) in my living room, and am extremely happy with it. I agree that it's likely you want a monitor, not a TV with a tuner built in.

SAMSUNG makes a great TV I have a 56 inch DLP that I love. two cousins also have SAMSUNG tv's and they are nothing but happy with them. I really feel that you could not go wrong with anything SAMSUNG, you will not be disappointed with it.

OK...so the Motorola cabel DVR box would be the tuner...and all I need is a monitor? Is that what I'm to understand?

I've got one as well. IMO, you walk into the store and there are two brands that look 1000% better than the other brands...Samsung and Sony. Spend the $200 - $300 to get the extended warranty. I have a four year old and s**t happens. With the manufacture warranty I'm covered for one year. If something happens, I have to box it and send it to Samsung. With the 4 year extended warranty somebody comes to my house and fixes it. If they can't fix it, the TV is replaced.

This salesman should be strung out for the crows to eat his gizzard after being beaten severely. What a bunch of crap. Good choice on the Samsung though.

For those looking for a deal I'd have to say wait for Black Friday and check sites like BFads.net

I will add that the future is definitely in OLED TVs... they aren't quite there yet in terms of the size people want/expect, but they are exceptionally thin, use little power, have a better contrast and "refresh rate" than LCDs or plasmas, and will be the next big thing for sure.

Oh, and OLED technology was invented by Kodak in Rochester, NY... and has been licensed to the bit Asian display manufacturers.

Correct. Unless you care about broadcast TV, you can eschew a tuner entirely. Just plug your cable box into the monitor, and away you go.

I work in the electronics department at Sam's Club, and the Sony Bravia and Samsung TV's are far and away the best ones we sell. I personally prefer the new 52" Bravia that we just started carrying because it comes with an external box that you can hook up to the Internet to stream video to the TV, and I think the picture quality is just a little better than the Samsung.

Just a few quick things:

-Good choice on the 120Hz. I would say within a matter of months, all new TV's being rolled out will be 120Hz instead of 60Hz.
-I would almost always recommend LCD's over plasmas. You get a brighter picture with the LCD, it uses less power, and weighs a lot less. They have roughly the same lifespan.
-I wouldn't recommend purchasing an extended warranty. Almost all electronics that fail do so within 90 days, while they are still under the manufacture's warranty. It just depends on whether or not you want the convenience of them coming to your house to fix it.
-OLED's are still a couple of years out before they are a viable alternative to LCD's or plasmas. I wouldn't wait on them.

Hope I could be of help. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I don't work on commission, so I can be honest with you :p

If it gives you comfort, then by all means get the extended warranty. However, I agree with Kosmo, the extended warranties are largely a sucker bet, and a fantastic source of revenue for the businesses who offer them. Solid state electronics will almost always fail within the first few months, or not at all [within the lifetime of the extended warranty].

Same goes for computers, don't bother with any extended warranties unless you have a very good reason for paying for one.

Thanks for the CR ratings. Been looking at the Phillips LCDs with 120Hrz displays, seems to have a lot of fans on the various geek boards, but no mention by CR. Sam's Club even has a great price on them.

Anyone with Phillips experience?

I have the 40 inch version of the A650 and I have had no problems with it. It looks great and should be a great addition to the area. I personally like the hint of red.

I have a Toshiba Plasma. Its about 3 years old. I bought the Toshiba because it used the higher end Panasonic plasma display but came with a tuner. At the time, to get the display, you had to buy a monitor only. What this taught me is that there are only two or three display manufacturers, so it can pay to shop around to know what you are buying. Some units have the same display but can vary in price based on marketing and branding.

At the time I purchase, LCD's had a problem with pixelating on motion as in football games, so this made me choose plasma. However, I am moving to Colorado, so I will switch to a 120 LCD because plasma's emit an annoying hum similar to a flourescent light at high altitude.

Costco is a good place to shop, they have many screen on display so you can compare them side by side, and they have or at least had a really good return policy on tvs's.

I bought mine from DTV City (www.dtvcity.com) ( I have no affiliation with this company). They were the most competitive on price for an AUTHORIZED dealer. Many online deals were less, but they were grey market and would not have an OEM warranty.

Good luck and have fun shopping
