Who's been listening to the History of Stern?...

Have been catching the History of Howard Stern on Sirius this week, and it listening to those old tapes brought to mind early days of radio that I used to listen to back in SF. Before really listening to the college stations of KSJS and KFJC, I would listen to KOME and, more frequently, KITS (Live 105) and Alex Bennett in the mornings. The comedy on that show was incredible back then - Bobby Slayton, Ellen Degeneres (when she did stand up at the Comedy Club and such), Will Durst, Jake Johannsen, A. Whitney Brown, etc. It was great, great stuff. I remembered Alex from his days at "THE QUAKE" KQAK 99. But he seemed to really have a home at Live 105 during that time - back when his feud with Stern was legendary (out there anyway). Now they are both on Sirius - go figure.

Also used to listen a (looking back) relatively craptastic station called KWSS, 94.5, with their morning djs, Kelly and Kline.

I still remember that "kaaay double you esssss esssssss" jingle of theirs. Any of my NorCal brothers/sisters remember the old El Paseo De Saratoga shopping center?

Also remember listening to KFAT - which I think was what went on to become the KWSS station. I had those KFAT stickers - with the guy with the large head and cowboy-type hat - everywhere. Think Kelly and Kline started there, and just stayed over in the KWSS days.

At any rate, it's been great to hear all those early - some truly awful - days of Stern on this history show. Looking forward to Part 2 later this year.

LOL! I am a Stern fan, an the tapes are great to hear some of the old stuff I forgot about.
Thanks for the reminder,
Rob

Years ago, I had a buddy that was the program director for a big AOR (album oriented rock) FM station in Eugene, OR. As a program director, he'd get air check tapes from DJ's all over the country. I can remember about falling off my chair listening to "Dennis Erectus" from KOME. The guy had his shtick down cold. A smokin' hot production staff and some funny, funny stuff. Rude as hell, but very funny.

Those were the days of analog ("slide rule") tuners. KOME came out with a little translucent blob that you were supposed to stick on your tuner's face to show where the station was. Yes, they referred to it on the air as the "KOME spot"......

It was an interesting time; FM was big, with lots of great stations. FM stations often played whole albums a side at a time without interruption on late Friday nights for taping (and no one threw a fit). My trusty ReVox reel to reel deck captured many albums this way, rendered faithfully from my McIntosh tuner. Folks LISTENED to records. Sound quality and production values mattered.....ahh, the "good old days".....

Thanks for the flashback, MC - B.B.S.

I remember those AOR stations - and also remember listening to entire albums at a time. I too used to tape so many stellar lps that way, as well would stand by ready to tape various songs, shows, segments, etc. It was a crazy time, for sure.

I remember the KOME spot and Dennis Erectus!!! I think Dennis got kicked off of KOME for FCC violations of some kind, but I also remember him going over to the other rock station of the time, KSJO in San Jose - I think KSJO was 92.3 or something. Last time I went back home, KSJO had become "La Preciosa" - a latin/Mexian oldies type station. KSJO and KOME used to be huge rivals, but when KOME went "modern rock" in the style of KITS, KSJO was one of the only AOR stations around back then. Those stickers too - I used to have them everywhere, along with the KOME diamond stickers.

Lol. Crazy times. With, you're right, so many good stations - many of which were not the corporate, Clear Channel behemoths of today; many independently/privately owned and operated. Back when "promotional" materials, if any, looked like this:

Got kind of tired packing and unpacking,
Town to town and up and down the dial
Maybe you and me were never meant to be,
But baby think of me once in awhile....

Flashback!! If you were listening to KSJS in those days my wife was the program director. Bill Kelly is now on the morning show at KEZR along with Dana Jang and Laurie Free. Sad, sad, about Dennis Erectus these days but I did pick up a few "old" KOME memorabilia at a recent fund raising for him.

I was a huge Alex Bennett fan when he was at the Quake, wasn't his news news guy named Joe Regelski? WENDY NELDER!

It's a literal who's who of the "old days" Bay Area radio scene when we go to the Christmas party every year.

.... those were the days.

Edit: Oh, and I was going to guess El Paseo de Saratoga before I read it! A friend of mine worked at Duran's hair salon back in the corner of that building  . Oh man ..... were those crazy days!

Ah, I miss those days. Miss Big Rick's show and Steve Masters. Big Rick went to KOME, right?
Steve Masters, I don't know all of what he ended up doing, but he did put out some of his "Masters' Mixes" on cd
and such and I picked those up when they came out. His "Trip Back To the 80's" cd is absolutely phenomenal, with
stuff from Fiction Factory, Succession, Dominatrix, etc., etc. Unbelievably cool mixes, all just like he used to
do on nights.

Great times man, great times.

And yep, I used to listen to KSJS all the time. Back then, in the mornings during the week once in a while, they had this guy - named J.D. I think, who used to do his "wake up" service wherein he would begin whispering very softly for quite a while, then begin screaming like a damn banshee. Then blast into the latest Dumptruck, Gurus or Guadalcanal Diary release.

KSJS was cool as hell and, in many ways, much better than KFJC for me. KSJS/SJSU was responsible for getting some amazingly cool shows to come play free at the student union too - from School of Fish (RIP Josh Clayton Felt) to Material Issue to The Rembrants (before their post-Friends phenom) to Jesus Jones to Ned's Atomic Dustbin, etc. It was an awesome time. Of course, the shows that came to the auditorium there were equally good - recall seeing The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Gallon Drunk, Mazzy Star, etc there. Also, once when some friends and I were on the basketball courts there, we ran into House of Pain and shot some hoops with them. That was kind of a freakishly crazy thing to have happened, but such was life in the Bay Area.

I've been a huge fan of Stern since 1992, but I am not impressed with the tapes. There is something about the sound of his voice back then that just really annoys me. What’s more, they have already played this stuff once before. I really wish that Sirius would pay Bubba what he deserves and put him on in the mornings while Stern is out. It would surely make Howard’s (30) vacations per year more bearable.

Some of his early stuff is annoying as hell. I particularly wanted to throttle him each time I have to hear him and that crappy drum-roll, rim-shot, cymbal crash kit he continously used. And, yeah, his voice back in the early, early days was grating. Still enjoy hearing the stories from that time, even if it's been played before.

Stern is my favorite, that's why I have Sirruis. I loved listening to WBCN Boston but its much funnier on Sirruis. Although I do miss him fighting with whatever program director he had at the time.

Oh, this takes me way back. I had KOME diamond stickers on my first car, although I never managed to land one of the old-style KSJO stickers. They had the weak black and white ones out by that time.

KSJO, KOME, KITS, 97.7, 97.3 were all in my FM presets. The current state of broadcast radio in Silicon Valley these days is depressing. I have to depend on my wife and friends to introduce me to new music since the stations suck so badly, and without my friends, my iPod would never need to sync to a computer again.

I don't pay for radio. Hell, I don't even have cable or satellite TV...but I was a big Howard fan in the '80s when he was on WNBC and WXRK in NYC. When my cousin (who was also a big Howard fan) moved to Dallas, I recorded dozens and dozens of shows for him on audio cassette. When he changed residences, he said he had shopping bags full of those tapes to move with.
Don't know if he still has 'em.

Big Rick is .... HERE ..... still doing radio and not a bad show at all. Steve Masters is at KFOX, I believe we saw him during the holidays at a Christmas party. I'll have to ask Alice about J.D.

What are you talking about Sean? don't you like KBAY? Steve Fox is one of our wine buddies

That's right, I forgot Big Rick went to KFOG. I checked out KFOX's website and didn't see Masters there but, oddly, saw that Greg Kihn is a dj there! Go figure that one. In checking Steve Masters' bio from his site, it says:

In September 2000 Masters returned to Bay Area radio as host of Three Martini Lunch on KCNL ("Channel 104.9"). Masters was allowed to bring in his CD collection each weekday at noon. He also brought to the station a Friday night dance show called Steve Masters' Modern Mix. Within a few months Masters moved to nights and then afternoon drive at sister San Francisco station KIOI ("Star 101"). Masters surprised San Francisco again in July 2002 when he returned to LIVE 105 to host a lunchtime retro show called "11 O'Clock Rewind." The response was explosive as Masters brought back the sound that made the station legendary.

However, it also reads: Steve Masters is available to DJ your corporate event or private party. He'll make it special and memorable.

Don't know how current that is though. :whistling:

I love you guys, Howard and Bubba are what get my through my day. Mandi, I wish Bubba could be on in the mornings right now too, but he's doing some terrestrial stuff in Tampa in the mornings, so he's pretty locked in to that work. Today's show was awesome. For you guys that don't know, today, Bubba The Love Sponge played an old tape of his before the FCC started effing him. The tape was of a porn star who was, diplomatically speaking, using her whole hand to penetrate the, uh, exit only hole. He goes into a call with Hulk Hogan (A long time friend of Bubba's) and plays a couple of bits for Hootie where a cast member's voice is replacing the 911 operators voice from the latest call that Hulk's wife had made. In Bubba's Sirius lifetime so far, he has shocked various genitals of both sexes with dog collars, given oral to a few of the porn stars that have been in studio, put shit in a fan and hit his coworkers with it, made an intern eat a pubic hair burrito, and I believe called that GodHatesFags chick a cunt right to her face, All of it LIVE ON AIR.

I love Sirius, and am NEVER going back to terrestrial radio.

OK, first the skate thread and now this. You are hell bent on pulling me back in time!

I spent my high school days on the air for KLEL. We barely hit downtown but it was fun none the less. I remember most of these Jocks coming out and desperately trying to convince us to run away from radio as fast as we could.

That was a great time in music for the bay area. Well, until Seattle took over.

924 Gilman was going strong. Green Day was playing Bday parties. Mr Bungle to Faith no More then back to Mr. Bungle. Primus was hitting it big. Jello Biafra was constantly on a spoken word tour. Great time, great shows.

Bubba is only on terrestrial radio in the mornings because Sirius did not pay him enough during their last negotiations. He needed to make more income. Hopefully, if the merger ever goes through, he will receive a better deal and work exclusively for Sirius.

I subscribed to XM year or so after they launched. Then, when Howard said he was going to leave terrestrial radio for Sirius, I followed him to Sirius. Since Howard has been on Sirius, I think I have listened to terrestrial radio less than a handful of times. It totally sucks. Same music over and over and massively censored bits.

Oh how I remember those days. Speaking of parties - those were the days when No Doubt were playing parties and Gwen Stefani was a total....well, she was hot then and she was easy to get to know, let's put it that way. Even then you could tell she (at least) was destined for huge things, though she kind of had the attitude to go along with it - regardless of how great a fuck she was. I was, by default really, a trumpet and valve trombone player in this ska band (that shall remain nameless at this point, but were well known in the SJ, SF and Los Gatos/Monte Sereno areas - even if payment did come by way of Taco Hell, Weinerschnitzel and Mickey D's) that used to play with them all the time - got to know a lot of folks that way - Dickey Barrett - played with the Bosstones at the old One Step Beyond out by the San Jose Airport a few times, as well as with Let's Go Bowling and with some legendary guys like Buster Bloodvessel (aka Bad Manners), Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Lester Sterling, etc. - even Special Beat when The Specials re-formed with The Beat. Then kind of quit the band and just would go help them out at shows and stuff with merchandise. Kind of became big and then really fell apart with Mike going off on his own to start his own record label(s) -forever ran out of his parent's garage. Just heard recently that one of the band members died - I think she was 36 years old or something - very sad and hard to believe she's gone at this point. She played well, sang some great songs and was, genuinely, a great person. Even though I hadn't spoken to her in over 15 years, it was tough to hear.

Grew up with those guys and it was indeed a great time. The LA bands and the SF bands were relatively cool with one another and it was, generally, a great, unified scene. Spent equal time down there and up in SF, as well as with doing endless rally-runs on my countless array of Lambys, Vespas - doing runs to SLO, LA, Seattle, with other scooter clubs like Vespa Club Los Gatos, East Bay Wreckin' Crew, Some Assembly Required, Burgundy Tops, etc....spending many mornings having breakfast up at the wonderful Alice's at the intersection of Hwy 84 & 35 in the Woodside area. Goddamn that place was great and started getting into bikes up there after graduating from scoots.

Green Day - used to see BJ and crew hanging out at Amoeba's in Berkeley (where I used to live at Amoeba's, Rasputin and First Kick Scooters - in addition to Gilman). The days of grandpappy's Operation Ivy, others like Donkey Show, Dance Hall Crashers, Hepcat - it was a great era and everyone seemed to help each other with whatever it was they were doing. Back before Alex Desert left to go to television (anyone remember "The Heights" on the then fledgling Fox?) and movies (Swingers, in particular). Alex is a fucking great guy and I still hear from him from time to time. Back when Mike Patton was an approachable guy you'd find at the Tower on Van Ness and then, the next day, see him at the Bammies. Swingin' Utters were around too - having known those guys from their days hanging out in Santa Cruz to days in SF. Chris Isaak as well - used to catch him surfing (we had that and boxing in common) quite often and would also run into him in SF, at Golden Gate Boxing Club - often grabbing a bite at this shithole mexican joint in SF. Of course, these were the days that he was still putting on free shows at the Three Flames Restaurant in San Jose - and the pseudo-wannabe-rockabilly group from SJ - The King Pins - were doing Star Search with Ed McMahon. But Chris was a nice guy and, to this day, I've never had to purchase one his cd's - they continue to arrive, with a short note, as gifts. Very cool.

Primus and Jello too - damn Les was, and is, such a cool guy. I remember seeing them back in their Frizzle Fry and PRIMUS SUCKS! days in Berkeley - Les trying to really get his name out there and hearing about him once try out for Metallica. Jello and the Alternative Tenacles bunch were cool as hell too - but then...I don't know...age and greed set in and all of it went to hell. As I've said before, I've gotten to skate with some of those guys and know Geoff, Darren and Ray - but I see both sides of things with that battle; just find that both sides have become the very things they used to sing against.

Ah, memories...
