Am I using my torch wrong?

Try this method, it can provide great entertainment as well:

Take a blue tip kitchen match and gently twist it while inserting the wooden end into foot of the cigar. Prop the cigar up with the blue tip sticking up. From 35 yards aim at the tip with a 22LR, it may take a few tries but once you ignite the match the cigar will be warming nicely by the time you get to it.

Flame??? Pfffft...You don't need no stinkin' flame.

A real man just uses a bent coat-hanger that's touching both the battery terminals of his pickup truck. :D

This is a repost of a video someone posted a while ago that I really enjoyed, it shows one method of lighting your cigar with a torch

I don't think the way he(in the video) "toasted" the cigar's foot is the way to toast a cigar. He had the torch aimed directly(slightly off-angle but close to inline) at the foot and therefore, was burning the tobacco not toasting it IMO. The intense heat that a torch creates should be held a fraction(1/4-1/2"?) of an inch away from the foot and at close to a 90 degree angle from the foot.

I know we all know this but it struck me that video purported to instruct was incorrect IMO.

Why bump a thread thats been dead for 4 months when you don't have anything to actually add?

You mean besides the obvious fact that there is quite a bit of humor in this thread and it needed to be revived?

Judging from the posts after mine, it seems like it has revived nicely...don't you think?

TugBoat, if it's actual lighting instructions that you need, hang on...I'll go take a pic of my truck, battery, and the coat-hanger as well. :D

Cigar Aficionado has some videos that should help.

Woah – thanks a lot for sharing this, I found this very informative, I’ve now watched all the videos on there.

It seems a bit inconsistent, you see them lighting cigars some videos and they get some real flame throwers going, and then one of the videos tells you how to properly light one. It seems odd to me that they are supposed to be reviewing the cigars and they don’t follow their own instructions.

I also found it interesting, going off topic here, that James was talking about how a spicy cigar is a bad cigar in the “In Nicaragua” Yet Gordon described the #2 Cigar of the year (fuente Fuente OpousX) “as being backed up with some real spice” *scratches head*

I watch the video and now I want to smoke. That is the method that I learned from my friend. It does make a huge difference if you take your time to light the cigar. You don't want to rush through the process.

I once saw "Christian Eiroa" light up a cigar....and flames came off the end as it lit.

If that method is good enough for him, it works for me!
