Got in my car this morning, turned the heater on, and once the engine warmed up, a very foul smell began blowing through my vent. When I got to work, I popped the hood, and it smelled atrocious! I'm not sure what's going on, but it smells like a dead rat. Is it possible that there is a dead rat under my hood? I looked around the engine and couldn't find anything. I'll take a closer look when I get home. Just wanted to see if this has happened to anyone else. There is no smoke coming from under the hood, but the smell is really bad. Ideas???

I don't know what to say about that...

I know that mould can grow in the HVAC plumbing... Maybe with all the rain we got, you've got something growing in there?

I wouldn't rule out a dead rat though...

It's a Ford... Hello????

NA

Did you leave my double-doubles under the hood while you were changing the oil ???

I don't want to say it...

that's what you get for driving a FORD

Someone you banned put some meat in there to rot probably. :sign:

You may have had a small animal crawl up in the engine where it stayed until you cranked the car and the animal met it's untimely end. I've had several friends have the same thing happen.

You need to get up under there and see if you can find the culprit. Doesn't that sound like fun?

I'm pretty sure this is what happened. I'm going under there tonight. If I find anything, I'm posting pictures.

I have one word - Cat Pi*s!

Happened to my neighbor when hestarted his truck it scared the pi*s out of a cat that was under the hood and it baked on the engine block. I've also seen squirrels, rats, possom, & racoons.

Its happened to me before, but then again, I live right by the desert. Here in Tucson, if you don't have your vehicle in a garage and don't drive it for a week, you'll get a pack rat taking up residence in the engine compartment.

It smells like sour burnt rubber, if you can imagine that. Also has that dead rat smell to it as well.

the smell of burnt rubber could be a melting belt, but more likely it's burning oil (from a leak)
My wifes car has a slow leak where oil drips on the exhaust, stinks something fierce...

You think that fits the bill?

Your heater is behind your dash which is connected to your cooling system. It sounds like the little radiator has blown. I hope for your sake this is not the case because it entails
stripping your dash. I had this happen to my Jeep.

Look under the mat/carpet on the passenger side. Not the regular dust collector mat, the cover over the metal. If you see coolant on the floor under the carpet, you have problems.
Also, run your aircon, if there's light smoke coming out of the vents then it's what I mentioned above.

Hopefully it's just a simple problem as others have suggested.

What Brain said....and Mike(a friend just had one go....awful smell)...oh...and it's a FORD!

Good luck.

Is the dead rat smell on the finish? And would you describe it as a full-bodied smell, or more medium-to-full?
