How many others there are out there like me.

Are you the type that is of the mantra, "If you've got em smoke em"?


Or, are you like me? If I get anything that is even somewhat rare, or hard to get your hands on, I have to lock it away for some very special ocassion. Then I have a hard time coming up with the "special moment" to torch these smokes.
This includes everything from DCM 90th, Davidoffs, Dunhills, Fuente Forbidden X, Don Carlos Anniv, aged ISOM's, etc.

The funny thing is that I have, and will gift these smokes before I will set flame to them.
 
For the most part...smoke' em. There are a few that are near and dear to my heart, tied more to the experience when or what I purchased them for (special occasions).
 
I run a community cooler-dor, 75% of what is in there has been gifted to me, and the soldiers that I work with. There is no inventory, only the honor system. IF someone wants a cigar they get it. There are gifts/bombs that mean more to me, allot of them are from members of this board, that I keep for myself and send home so they can age a bit. But for the most part I think cigars are for smoking or sharing. If I am not doing one, I am doing the other, and a lot of the time I am doing both.

I am now going to take the time to thank everyone here at CP for being the most generous bunch of Nuts I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

I'd say that when I have rare singles, I tend to hold them. Now this makes sense to me if there is little to no possibility of ever obtaining another or a box of said cigar. There is a fear that drives this course of action and that is that if I smoke it, it might not meet expectation or that I might not be in optimum condition or settings to allow me to maximize what I am looking to get out of the cigar. In other words, it will be wasted and the unrealized value (which might be substantial) will drop drastically once set fire to.

Like you, I have tended to gift away some rare sticks that a) I deem someone else to appreciate them more or b) it would be fun.

However, as I now think about it, since I only have one of each specimen, why shouldn't I smoke it? It's not like I'm going to try and decide whether or not I like it enough to buy a box. That'll never happen.

I guess at the heart of it there are two dark sides to this insecurity: I'm afraid to be disappointed by the cigar. I'm afraid that I'll disappoint the cigar (by not being on top of my game in being able to extract all that the cigar has to offer.)

I smoke 'em all. I've bought boxes for once a year smoking, but if I have a cigar, I'll find a time to smoke it.

When I first started enjoying cigars, I hoarded the special ones. Then I realized by not smoking them, I was missing out. The last one that I had set back for a special occasion was an 858 Rosado, that I smoked when I closed on our first house.
 
I'm with Rob K. I have a couple sticks that I won't touch, but for the most part I'll smoke 'em.

I have 3 Forbbiden X's and have never smoked one.(ever) There is always tomorrow right?
 
I'll save a good one or two for a special occasion, but criteria for a special occassion is like "Oh man, work sucked today, I'mma go smoke that Sig V"
 
Other than holding on to things that will benefit from aging, I am a smoker, rather than a collector. that said, there are some things that can benefit from many years of aging.

There's a wistful feeling that comes with torching something rare, that I'll probably never see again but the "what if you get hit by a bus tomorrow" thought always wins out.

It's rare, but the occasional gifting of something I think someone would appreciate more than I makes for a good feeling.
 
I smoke everything...well, almost, there is the occasional exception! I have 3 boxes of 2006 Taboada which smell like crap and I cannot smoke them for probably another year.
That's one of my few exceptions, I don't have a say in those smokes, it is what it is. However, anything that is ready to go, age, rarity, from Winston Churchill himself, I smoke em.

Being new, I cherish the HTF cigars I've received.. I'm saving them for the fear that they would go to waste on my inexperienced palate. ???

That....and there's just so many right now...
 
Comes down to the question of which you'd rather say..."I've smoked one of those." or "I've got one sitting in my humidor." Unfortunately, I can't make up my mind.
 
I have two cigars that I am holding to smoke with my father (after our annual wood-cutting weekend) and one Opus Belicoso that I'm saving for something. Then there's a couple odds and ends boxes that are for aging. Other than that, everything is fair play. I prefer to save the 'good' cigars for when I know I've got the time to enjoy them. That said, I do have some smokes that are specifically for the Thursday night MN herf night, and others that are for when the wifey and kids are away.
 
I am trying to save some for special occasions I have 3 boxes (different sticks) of my favorites that I reserve for my grand daughter's birthday, wedding aniversary and my birthday. I still have 3 boxes to go for my wife's birthday and both of my kid's birthdays. Then there are the holidays, I could go on and on, but I just don't have the room.

I try to age some of the ones I really enjoy, but I just can't keep my hands off them.

I'm one who'll gift the good stuff 'till I'm out. and smoke the 'yard gar's' 'till the cows come home.

I personally really need a good reason to smoke a really awesome cigar. I've got one stashed away for the house purchase, and another for the birth of my baby (sometime in March, shh! [threadjack?]). Deep deep down in the humi I've cached away a few for future events as well, but most everything has gone back out.

I believe at least a part of the hobby is a want to understand and truly appreciate the subtlety of the smoke. As my tastes evolve I suspect this habit will change.

Dead on, John. I tend to keep a few boxes of mid line cigars, tons of low end stuff, but just a few of the high end smokes. Those I rarely smoke, but rather end up giving them away.
 
If I hoard them, and die tomorrow, my wife will have a pretty good idea of how much money I spend on cigars. If I smoke them, there is very little evidence.

Most of my rare and special stuff is the result of gifts, or was bought to trade or gift.
