Well I have wanted one of these since I saw one at my first HERF, so I finally smoked enough sticks to put one together.

I have gotten alot of positive feedback on this one, so I will offer (AT LEAST) 2 more for the board. I want to do this raffle style, the entry fee is 10 cigar bands; Opus that is. So I will take up to 15 people to enter, That should cover enough to make 2 possibly 3 ashtrays, I am covering the cost of everything else. (Glass Ashtray at my local is $12 and shipping will be another $5)
After they are finished, I will assign all participants a number and then have a non-participating member pick 2 (or 3) numbers at random.
Entrants will mail me the bands as soon as possible. If you have extra that you want to contribute, I may make more. So send more if possible.
Let the fun begin..

10 easy steps to enjoying your own personalized cigar band ashtray
First, Smoke about a zillion cigars and save all the bands, not such an unenjoyable thing. Every cigar band you see in these ashtrays have been saved from personal smokes. If you look close enough you'll see some rough torn edges on a few of them, but I got better at getting the bands off the more I tried. The big round one took about 130-150 bands to cover, the others obviously less. Try to store the bands so they flatten out.
Second, Find youself a nice heavy clear glass ashtray, actually harder to locate than you might think. The local 5 & 10 just dosen't carry them anymore. I've found that Ebay is a good source for variety, though often over priced. Restaurant supply companies are an excellant source as well, and usually cheaper, but style choices may be fewer.
Third, Make sure the ashtrays are clean, inside and out, the bottom, and especially the finger rests, where the cigars sits.
Fourth, Get youself some decoupage glue, found at any craft store, has the consistancy and appearance of Elmer's Glue, but dries very clear. Also pick up some light weight felt material, for the base of the ashtray. Any color you want, or that is available. I used "Hunter Green".
Fifth, Spread out your cigar bands and by looking at your ashtray decide how you want to arrange them. Remember you'll be placing them so the bands show through from underneath (well DOH!!!.... ). A "random" pattern is not as random as they appear. Really, take a few moments to do this and decide on an approach. The first centered band should be the one you want to display most prominently.
Sixth, Apply a liberal coat of glue to the face of the cigar band and place it on the bottom of the ashtray. I've found it's easier for me to work from the center out, for symmetry, but if you have another pattern in mind that may work too. Be careful not ot overlap the bands by too much, or you won't be able to tell what it is. After placing the cigar band on the ashtray apply a little more glue to the back and use your finger to to rub the band to remove any air from underneath it. If you get air caught between the band and the bottom of the ashtray it will look fuzzy or milky when dried, something you don't want.
Seventh, Continue applying overlapping bands until the entire bottom of the ashtray is covered. Apply bands over corners and flutes the same way, making sure they are completely adhered and that there is no air underneath. I allow the bands to over run the edges and come back later and trim after the glue has set up. Make sure you get all the holes covered. You can go back after the glue has set up to see where any holes are and apply cover bands to those areas. This is where you can use pieces of your least favorite bands to cover up any small openings in the covering. Add a little more glue to the back and rub it down good, all over. Yes this does get a little messy, but the glue washes off easily, or peals off if dry enough.
Eight, Set your ashtray up on a can or bottle, face down, and let the glue dry. This may take 24 hours or more to get it good and dry. After it's dry, go back with a pair of sharp sissors and trim any overhanging bands from around the edge. Do a final check for holes by holding the ashtray up to a light source. Add bands to cover holes as noted above.
Ninth, After the ashtray is completely dry, cut and dry fit your felt to the bottom, covering all the bands you have applied. This will protect your bands from being pulled loose and protect the table you set it on as well. After you're satisfied with the dry fit of your felt, apply another liberal coat of your decoupage glue to the base of the ashtray and start applying your felt. Don't worry if some of the glue soaks through, it will dry clear, but be careful not to work those areas too much, it will cause the felt to "fuzz". After you glue all the felt in place, set the ashtray face down on your can or bottle again and let it dry for 24 hours minimum.
Tenth, After its dried completely you can go back with your sharp sissors and do any final edge triming necessary to the felt. Place the finished ashtray on the table or smoking stand near your favorite chair. Go to your humidor and pull out a good one (initiations should be done with appropriate pomp and ceremony). Next light up your favorite and enjoy.
Caution: When cleaning, DO NOT SUBMERGE WASH THIS ASHTRAY!!. Cleaning will need to be by hand and only the inside surfaces of the tray. Although some moisture may get on the felt be careful not to soak the felt, or allow moisture to penetrate the felt backing. Remember, the glue used is waterbased and will release if gotten too wet.
Hope this has been helpful.
