De La Hoya vs. Mayweather

Leaving tomorrow to go catch this fight in person, and I can't wait.

Personally, I've always been a De La Hoya fan. He's a classic boxer and I think he will simply out box Mayweather, Jr. I don't think it's going to be a brawler, and will, to a some degree anyway, come down to tactical maneuvers and strategy. De La Hoya is very much equipped to deliver that in spades. But, added to that, he's got an incredible left hook, lightning fast jabs and, as stated, he's just a better boxer. Mayweather, Jr. is just a loud-mouthed, bitchy punk, just like Vargas, and we all (at least some of us) saw what became of Vargas against De La Hoya. Mayweather, Jr. just won't have what it takes, certainly in the strength of his hits. He couldn't muster a clobber against Judah, nor Baldomir. He just jib-jabbed his way around. And Mayweather Jr's move in weight class is not something he will be used to, nor I think will he be able to adequately handle. De La Hoya has been there and done that in the differing weight class bouts, and he's comfortable with it. And De La Hoya is one who not ony can clobber, but can take a beating and keep going as well. However, I don't think he's going to have to worry about a "beating" from the hands of Mayweather, Jr.

Even though De La Hoya has some time out of the ring, since his last fight anyway, I don't think he's slowed down or softened up one bit.

It'll be a damn good fight. I do think it's getting hyped way too much, but it still is going to be one for the ages nonetheless.
You could take them all. Right,.......... Little Hammer? ;)

If Spanish is not a language you're used to, go check your Babel Fish. Nothing "little" in El Martillo.

And what the hell are you talking about? ???

The hammer or, The Gavel.......................Just being silly and refering to the recent Padron ad that spoke of "El Martillo...The little hammer". Look it up if you get CA.
No offense meant.

I've seen that ad and in no way is that what came to my mind. But, got your PM (sent you a response as well) and all is cool.

At what level are you boxing? What's your record? Would be cool to go see a BOTL box. Als, living in CT it would be somewhat difficult. I have all sorts of family and friends all over Florida so you never know........Stay safe mano.

De La Hoya is a class act. It would be difficult not to be in his corner. It'll be close, possibly a split decision, with De La Hoya on top.

Doc.

Have competed over the years at many levels. Now, simply doing amateur, also doing some coaching to kids once in a while. Record is 43-11, 26 KO. I have traveled to box, going all over really. Last trip was to P.R. Never been to CT to box, but maybe one day, who knows. I'm not realy focusing anymore on seriously boxing. Just do it now to keep my sanity, have fun, knock some heads and generally stay a part of something that's been with me virtually my whole life.

Thanks brother...for the interest and support.

I'm an avid Boxing fan and I am pleased to see others here watching boxing (although no one as young as me, 23 :( making me slowly realize this is a dying sport). Finding other boxing fans - you can just connect and talk about stuff.

I am a big Mayweather fan. I love his impenetrable defense and his speed. I am in awe of it. Meanwhile, De la Hoya has faltered a lot lately - he lost on everyone's cards but the judges to Felix Sturm! I'm not going to say that Oscar has no chance - he has a better hook but I'm not even going to say he's more powerful. My boy, Pretty Boy Floyd though is an artist in the ring. It's amazing to see people just throw and throw and all they hit are gloves and air, and then watch the counters. The weight changes are a concern but that's really about it. I hope and expect to see a Mayweather win by decision (unless it's fixed for the Golden Boy...again). By the way, I like Floyd's personality - a calm, serene guy who puts on this asshole personality to make himself be a bad guy, but is really somewhat tormented on the inside. Although it may not appear it, I think he has as much heart as any fighter out there.

Saturday is indeed shaping up to be a delightful day. A lot of my friends are going out of town - which in this case, I consider a blessing - a buddy from college is coming over, I'll smoke a cigar (if this stuffy nose disappears), then watching the Derby and the fight - should be a nice, relaxing Saturday evening.

BTW, MiamiCubano - although I love your writing in general, I think you sorely underestimate Floyd and overestimate your boy. Vargas was NEVER even remotely touted - not even close - as Floyd deservingly is and they have different styles and personalities. Either way, I hope you enjoy your trip and post-fight "cheer me up" cigar. :sign:

P.S: I just got caught screwing around in the office again. I need a new job before they fire me.

Getting ready to head out to Vegas via private in a bit. Will be flying into the FBO at Henderson, and then transported over to the Strip. Might have some free time this evening (the little wife wants to see "Love" by Cirque, so I may end up accompanying), so if I get back on here, any of you Vegas BOTLs that are up for a mini-herf, let me know.

Can't wait for the fight tomorrow!

Enjoy Mano...Ciique is always good. That's one hell of a record, cool that you look out for the kids. Myself, I left managing Mfg Plants to Mentor kids. The money sucks but, the smiles are priceless. Keep us abreast of you pugilistic adventures.

Not after what I saw last night, and that split decision was B.S.!!!!

No kidding. No way that was split. I gave De La Homo maybe 3 or 4 rounds at most.

Floyd went to work on him with precision all night :sign:

True that he was precise, but what Oscar said post fight was so true. If he had not pressed there would have been no fight. There is something inherently wrong when you can run all night and counter and take away the champs belt. Before you all freak out I also agree he won on points, but c'mon that was a pathetic win especially after all the bullshit smack he talked.

Of course there was smack talk...it was a huge fight being heavily promoted. How boring would it have been had nobody said anything and we saw the same fight.

Obviously De La Hoya wasn't the easiest fighter to meet in the ring, and that's why there wasn't a massacre. Still...I'd hardly say Floyd was "running" away, and I don't think anyone who saw the fight is going to say "ALL" his shots were counters. Someone in one of these threads said Oscar would be Floyd's toughest fight and that was right.

Well, back from Vegas and, seeing this fight first hand, I can say it was one hell of a fight. As I suspected, this wasn't going to be a brawl and would come down to strategy and technical aspects. While I freely disclose my bias, I still think it wasn't one that should have been judged in Mayweather, Jr's, favor. He was, is and remains, a bitchy loud mouthed punk and he simply could not deliver what he said he was going to deliver throughout the entire pre-fight build up. If you are going to talk sh*t, make sure you can deliver...i.e., back up your words with actions. He couldn't do it. Precision wise, De La Hoya delivered a better fight. Mayweather didn't "run" the entire time, but he ran a good bit of it. The jabs and blows he did land were not entirely "counters" either, but he wasn't the one leading this fight...it wasn't "his" fight. He was trying to tire De La Hoya out, not knock him out, something he failed to accomplish on both points.

This fight should have gone to De La Hoya...but still, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Very much worth going there for.

Weird how different folks see the exact same thing and have a completely different perception of what they saw ;)

At least you got to see it live :)
If you don't mind me asking, what did a seat at the event run you?

True enough...

The tickets came at kind of the last minute actually. They were "given" to me by a close friend of mine, and we flew out in his Gulfstream. But, "gifts" like this between us always ended up being reciprocated in some manner. In terms of what he paid for the tix though, I suspect it was around 6 to 7k a piece. He wouldn't tell me the precise cost.

I'm betting you know much more about boxing than I. Actually I hardly ever watch it. Although, I did see this on PPV and would have to disagree with you. I too may have thought De La Hoya should have won if I saw it live. He did indeed press the action much more. Watching his flurries and how he pressured sometimes at first glace would make me think he would win. But, after each round where he did this they replayed in slow-mo and few of his punches landed. It even looked like Mayweather was catching a beatdown and wasnt blocking. However after watching the replay he was barely hit. This is how I can see why he won and I'd have to agree.
