I was recently at a herf in the Quad Cities. A friend showed up with three of these, he gave two of them away - one to me. He torched the last one and while he enjoys a full bodied smoke, he said it kicked his butt. I intend to let this sit in the humidor for a while to rest then I will light her up and post a review. I found a thread that Moki initiated stating he has had one, but I was unable to find a review.

I have heard of the Pinar line of pre-embargo tobacco, but this is the first I have come across in person. I believe it to be a blend of pre-embargo Cuban and Ecuadorian tobacco’s. I understood these to be made in the US (Miami), but notice the wording on the box.

I would certainly appreciate any information on this particular cigar.

Doug

That coffin is built like the one a friend gave me, with a fake Cohiba(as far as I know) in it. My box has red envelope also written on it.

IIRC they were supposedly 100% Cuban Tobacco from the Pinar region when they first came out.......never ever tasted that way..... to me at least.

I figure by know with all of the new cigars they have introduced they by now are down to 1% with the rest being Nic filler. :)

im also interested on more info about this stick, as i have seen them floating around and they look mighty enticing....

Don't bother -- marketing hype at its worst.

Amen and absolutely.

If you try and search for the Gurkha Pre-Embargo cigars, you might find some mention of these sticks in those threads somewhere. As those "pre-embargos" go, the Gurkhas were far better than the Pinars. I think the Gurkhas were 100% pre-embargo tobacco. These Pinars are (or at least, were, when they were released) 50/50 and, honestly, they taste like my groin/abdominal protector smells after a bout.

Avoid these at all costs.

Most of what I read about them was that it was all advertising. There have been challenges about their "find" of real preembargo Cuban tobacco. At best the smoke was average. I have not tried one, but all those I know who have said it was not worth it.

Opinions, of course, abound. There are MANY fairly mis-informed legends about it as well.

Perhaps worthwhile to note that there have been several different blends of Pinars, from the original Pinar 1958, to the Serie B, to the P2000 to the P3000. Beacuse they have been so different in character, some folks have formed an opion of all of them based on their experience of one of them.

Discussion of the provenance of the tobaccos used is kind of moot. Essentially, the entire line-up is gone. The tobaccos have run out and the company has moved on to bigger and better things. A very limited number of boxes of various things continue to circulate among the retailers that were authorized to sell Pinars at all.

The SERIE B pictured was a 50/50 blend created back around 1999. It quickly became the sole province of CI, who placed it in the Red Envelope gift catalog as a 3pack item. Whatever stock of that cigar remains is in CI's hands. The makers of the cigar did NOT produce the box in your picture. The cigars were never produced in the DR, nor were they rolled in Miami.

Ultimately, as others have said, I think it is only your own palate that should determine if the cigar is good or bad, worth it or not, a little cuban, alot cuban, not cuban at all. I have personally never seen a cigar generate more divergent opinions as to taste and quality, nor have I ever encountered more debate about a cigar story. I guess, at this point, it is TWO pieces of cigar history; tobacco from the 1950's and controversy from the 21st century.

Wow... I can think of 1000 ofther cigars I would rather spend $25 a stick on. And I'm a newb.

I've tried one of these gifted by a friend I work with. They were medium bodied, burned pretty good through out with ocassional creamy hints. What really turned me off was about every now and again I got this horrific metallic taste in my mouth. Wasn't drinking anything at the time and hadn't eaten anything in a while.
