Speaking of Christian Bale, I loved Batman Begins. I thought it was the BEST Batman movie to date.

As for Casino Royale, it was Bond before he was "Bond". The events in this film made him what he turns out to be. It's supposed to take place at the beginning of his career. I thought it was very good.

Saw "Fracture" last Friday - good movie, Anthony Hopkins. IMO is one the best actors of his generation.

Brian

Wow, nobody has mentioned 'Grindhouse.'
That was an amazing movie-going-experience and one that should be seen IN THE THEATER by everyone who thinks of them self as a movie-fan.

The Prestige was my favorite film from last year and is absolutely worth checking out. If you've enjoyed the film read the book as well. It is totally different than the film but they work very well together.

The Departed shouldn't be missed. Seeing one of America's foremost cinematic voices tackling a Hong-Kong crime story is a real treat. And it was one of the few 'Best Picture' winners that I've agreed with in a long time.

Pi is 10 years old now but it is one of my all-time favorite films so I always mention it.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a funky detective story that is great foil to some of the classic Chandler films (the Big Sleep etc.)
Anything by Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tannenbaums, and The Life Aquatic)
Narc is an amazing police procedural that grabs your guts from eh first shot and never lets them go. The director's folow-up: Smokin Aces is a visceral as Narc, but not as serious in tone or as effective as Narc.

All of the above films, with the exception of Grindhouse and Pi, Live and die by the performances of their cast, and as such would be additionally good viewing for an aspiring actor.

EDIT: cuz I can't spell today.

The Illusionist, it was 2x better then the Prestige.

I don't think I could disagree with you more. Prestige did a lot more to develop the plot of the movie and the ending made much more sense than in the Illusionist. Bale was more amazing then Norton.

To each his own.

Casino Royale......I have heard it was the best Bond movie yet......I think it is the worst Bond movie yet......it is not a Bond movie!

The Texas hold-em is game a joke, and it is the key event in the movie:

1...They are supposedly good players and make every mistake in the book.
2...The chip values don’t add up to the bets they make
3...Bond figures out the other guy’s tells in one hand
4...They go all in and shove all their money out in the middle of the table
5...They play for hours and end up having the exact same amount of money on the last hand.
6...There is a total of $92,000,000 bet on the last hand and the hand is worth $150,000,000
7...The bad guy notices that Bond changes his shirt during a break but doesn’t notice that his hands and knuckles are battered and bloody…..in a poker game yet.

It is an okay movie but it is not a Bond movie:

1....In Bond movies Bond is ultimately sociable and the best of the best, is this movie Bond is unsociable and considered a liability by MI6
2...In Bond movies the stunts are comically far fetched, in this movie the stunts are just far fetched but portrayed as real
3...Bond falls in love which is not allowed in a Bond movie
4...Bond wakes up from cardiac arrest feeling chipper as a jay-bird

Not that impressed

x2

Edit: Agree with all on Serenity......not only is Josh Whedon amazing, I mean who else could make a cowboy/western Sci-fi not only work but even seem semi-plausible? The acting was genius and the deliver of lines, both serious and comic, not only hit the marks dead on but also were brilliant in there ability to have you believe they would be standard and then completely spin you around when they were not.

couldnt agree with you more. i think craig makes a great bond, but this movie sucked.

THE PRESTIGE.

Great movie. Then again, I like illusion and magic.

couldnt agree with you more.

The Illusionist, it was 2x better then the Prestige.

last but not least.....couldnt agree with you more

Serinity
Pan's Labyrinth
The Departed
The Machinist
Casino Royale ( I liked it BECAUSE they cut out 90% of the gadgets and showed us where he comes from, that he is human. In the novels there is a reason there are no J. Bond Jr's running around. After the movie, you know why. )

The Illusionist, it was 2x better then the Prestige.

To each his/her own but (IMO) it's the opposite.

Granted, The Illusionist was an entertaining movie with some interesting, albeit predictable twists. Also, a bit more believable than The Prestige. However, I found Norton's acting uninspired and the plotline "cookie-cutter" and predictable.

On the other hand, Bale gave an outstanding performance in The Prestige and the supporting cast were great. The last 20 minutes of the movie are pure genius.

Is that all you noticed? :sign: Man, you need to go back and rewatch...pay attention this time: :sign:

When Bond goes into his Aston Martin for the very first time, he does not close the door. He then reaches for his gun in the glove compartment, and immediately after, the door is closed.

Bond leaves the Venice hotel wearing his typical Omega watch. It stays with him throughout the final action sequence, but disappears as soon as he's under water. It later reappears on the boat while talking with M.

When Vesper gets up from the table after having dinner with Bond, she picks up her wallet and phone with her left hand and uses her right hand to push herself up from the chair. When the shot cuts, Vesper is holding her wallet in her right hand and pushing herself up with her left hand.

Camera crew reflected in the door of the Ford hire car and the Range Rover when Bond gets out of both at the hotel.

SPOILER: During the torture scene, close-ups of Bond's face reveal bloody markings on his right cheek that disappear and reappear between shots.

After the fight in the stairwell between Le Chiffre's clients, Bond returns to the poker table with no sign of the face injuries he received during the fight.

When the Skyfleet airplane prototype is first shown in its hangar, it has winglets at the outer tips of its wings. When the plane is later shown on the tarmac outside the hangar, the winglets are gone.

When Bond is watching the Ocean Club security video from the archive, the time display shows that the footage was supposedly recorded at around seven o'clock in the evening, but the shadows in the shot show that it is clearly much closer to noon.

When the aircraft carrying Bond to the Bahamas is first shown in the air approaching the airport it has an American registration (N followed by some digits). In a following shot when the aircraft is on the ground and Bond is getting out of the aircraft, the registration is all letters (probably a British G registration).

Towards the beginning of the film, when Bond jumps off the van into the embassy, the patch of ground he lands on is obviously a landing mat with leaves and turf covering it.

At the beginning, during the chase on the crane before the huge explosion, a cameraman is visible for just a second flying over the scene on a delta-wing.

During the chase at the beginning of the film, when Bond goes on his first assignment, his gun can sometimes be seen on the back of his right hip, then it disappears, then reappears when he needs it.

At the very beginning of the film, when Bond is talking to Dryden in his office, a wire can be seen leading from the Dryden's chair off-screen. You later on see that was used to flip the chair.

SPOILER: During the final scene when James shoots Mr. White in the leg, knee pads are obviously worn under Mr. White's pants. Not much is known about Mr. White though, it is possible that he does wear knee braces, he's an old man after all. Or perhaps he just returned from a game of cricket!
Camera briefly reflected in a shop window when Bond leaves the bank in Venice.

SPOILER: When Bond is trying to save Vesper from the cage underwater, in one shot the impression of an outline of a diving mask is clearly visible around her face.

SPOILER: When Mathis is talking with Bond before he is shocked, lighting equipment is reflected in his sunglasses

In the scene before the last one, when Bond is on the yacht talking to M, his laptop is displayed and open on his bag, after they hang up the phone and cut back to Bond, the laptop is gone.

On two occasions during the poker tournament, the players who are still in the pot at the end of the hand show their cards out of proper sequence. Normally the last person to bet or raise would be the first person to show their cards. This rule was broken in the movie for dramatic effect, allowing the winner to show his cards last.

Shortly before Vesper uses the defibrillator on James the heart-beat-sound slows and turns into a continuous sound, showing cardiac arrest. Electric defibrillation does not work on non-beating hearts.

At the beginning of the movie and as a background, some confidential documents are shown where it is stated that James Bond has now 007 status. It should have stated that he has now "double 0" status

During the chase scene at the airport, the Miami Police fire at the fueling vehicle, taking out at least three tires. During the final sequence of the scene, however, the vehicle clearly has all its tires intact.

Part of the movie is set at the Bahamas which driving on left. But every car, even the Bahamian, is left hand driven instead of being right.

When Bond's suffering the cardiac arrest, and is receiving instructions to use the defibrillator, the moment he opens his shirt you can see that one patch is already on the lower part of his chest, only then he starts opening the kit.

During the poker game, James looks at his cards and he has an Ace and King of Spades. When the bids are complete and he shows his cards they are an Ace and King of Hearts.

M tells Bond that the CIA uncovered a massive shorting of airline stocks prior to 9/11. She then says, "When the stocks hit bottom on 9/12 somebody made a fortune." Airline stocks didn't do anything on 9/12 because the New York Stock Exchange did not reopen until 9/17.

When an International fuel truck is being filled it releases air from air brakes. When Bond is driving this truck several minutes later the brake lines are damaged but the brakes do not engage as is normal in truck with dual pot air systems.

At the end of the poker game, Bond flips the dealer a $500,000 chip, but this is a tournament chip, worthless outside of the tournament and absolutely useless to the dealer.

At Miami airport, the man who walks through the metal detector before Richard Branson activates the alarm but is not searched and allowed to collect his hand luggage!

When Bond grabs a knife off the table with all the intention to kill Le Chiffre he grabs a simple butter knife, later when he is stopped by another player, we see a close up of the knife which is now a Swiss army type of knife.

Even if he has a respiratory ailment (he shows no symptoms), Le Chiffre doesn't know how to use his inhaler. He just squirts it into his mouth without inhaling, and without having first exhaled.

After rescuing Vesper from the water, Bond leaves her on her back instead of putting her in the recovery position to let the water drain from her lungs. He then (as is common in movies) gives her a romantic kiss instead of the kiss of life, for which you first have to tilt the head back and then blow horizontally into the lungs.

When the Aston Martin is flipped off the road, the force that it hits the ground is so hard that the cars air bags should have come out.

During the scene at the airport, the fuel truck driven by the terrorist sustains multiple gunshots to the tire, which slows it down, but the truck performs normally while Bond is driving it.

Crane chase: The load of pipes hanging underneath the crane hangs lower when Bond jumps on it, then it does in the scene before when he turns around on the steel girder to take a running start.

During the Miami airport vehicle scene, a Czech airlines Airbus is clearly visible (could be an A320 or A321 - difficult to tell from the shot). This aircraft would not fly routes to Miami from Prague due to limited range.

(Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tannenbaums, and The Life Aquatic)

All great movies. The Life Aquatic is in my top ten. Absolute must see if you liked Tannenbaums.

Since we're pulling some oldies I must say watch Blade Runner if you like SciFi.

edit:: Jeebus Miami that is a detailed list there. Was that all things you picked up?

Good one on the airbus!

Guess I had a hard time with Batman fighting Wolverine with magic tricks.

If you guys want to see a good movie with Daniel Craig watch Layer Cake.

Serenity was ok but It was like a 2 hour season ending episode instead of a stand alone movie.

Green Street Hooligans wasen't bad

The departed was good but predictable.

It’s been awhile since I seen a truly good movie the caliber of the boondocks saints, or lock stock and two smoking barrels.

I gotta give props to Little Miss Sunshine. I'm a huge Steve Carrell fan anyway, but he, coupled with Arkin and Kinnear...it was a great movie.

Also, sort of related to Little Miss Sunshine in a "The Office" sort of way, I saw "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" recently too (which features Luke Wilson, Uma Thurman and Rainn Wilson (aka Dwight Schrute). While it was sometimes a bit much, you gotta love the sense of humor in the bitter-ex-girlfriend way that permeates the entire movie. Definitely put together by someone who knows some of the exes of my past.

And speaking of "Green Street Hooligans," I recently saw "Everything Is Illuminated" (also with Elijah Wood) and was pretty impressed. Not a bad flick at all.

I also gotta second whoever mentioned "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang." OUTSTANDING movie, with Robert Downey, Jr (one of my favorite, if not troubled, actors). It's been on HBO, Showtime, Flix, one of those channels recently, so try to catch it if you can.

Also just saw (on one of those channels), 11:14. Pretty damn good movie, if not a bit predictable. But good nonetheless. Good to watch late night.

I think the best movies I have seen recently would have to be Grindhouse, 300, and The Departed. No other movie, till Spiderman 3, even comes close right now.

I just remembered another I saw recently I liked very much, Snatch. Directed by Mr Madonna as I recall.

2X on Layer Cake.
