I had today some cafe con leche and the way I prepare it is all milk and half a spoonful of instant coffee. It's easy, fast to make, just add instant coffee to warm milk and stir. I was wondering is there a way to convert regular ground coffee i.e. Starbucks blend into instant coffee? I don't drink alot of coffee, but when I do I don't want to use the coffee pot. I'd rather heat the milk in the microwave and add my spoonful of coffee.

There is one way that is actually very good - make up a batch of cold water extract. You'll have to refregerate the extract once it's done, but what you basically have is concentrated liquid coffee. A cup of hot water and a shot of the extract actually makes a pretty damn good cup of joe.

I'm no expert on the preparation of the extract but I know it's very simple. There are instructions all over the web and I'll bet our resident expert, Mr. Jerry, could offer some insight there.

Cheers - B.B.S.

This viejo I am good friends with, he ONLY makes his cafe con leches with instant coffee. He taught me his method of preparing yet, doing just as you do. Although he insists NesCafe is the only one that is any good for this. I have to admit, I have been in a situation on more than one occassion wherein I had to resort to this, and NesCafe works beautifully for this. Not a real cafe con leche mind you, but very tasty. I still keep a jar of NesCafe around at all times.

Edited for a typo.

LOL, that's the same one I use NesCafe. I keep a bottle in the freezer. It's tasty!

As I've said, I've used it on more than one occassion. Lol. And, the NesCafe is actually better than the other instants like Bustelo or Pilon.

Keeping coffee in the freezer will actually dry it out.

Instant coffee...it's freeze-dried coffee ya muck! :sign:

But, still I don't put coffee of any kind into the freezer. I keep my NesCafe in one of the pantries.

I recently watched that Discover Channel show on coffee and most of the coffee beans in the world go to make instant coffee. Apparently it is very popular everywhere in the world but the US.

I am still waiting for someone to invent instant water.
...how about powdered water:

#46: Hong Kong Powdered Water
In 1982 the South China Morning Post announced that a solution to Hong Kong's water shortage was at hand. Scientists, it said, had found a way to drain the clouds surrounding the island's peak of their water by electrifying them via antennae. The paper warned that this might have a negative impact on surrounding property values, but the government had approved the project nevetheless. Furthermore, more clouds could be attracted to the region by means of a weather satellite positioned over India. And finally, as a back-up, packets of powdered water imported from China would be distributed to all the residents of Hong Kong. A single pint of water added to this powdered water would magically transform into ten pints of drinkable water. Hong Kong's radio shows were flooded with calls all day from people eager to discuss these solutions to the water shortage. Many of the calls were very supportive of the plans, but one woman pointed out that the pumps needed to supply powdered water would be too complicated and expensive.

Let me start by saying that if that's the way you like yoour coffee then good for you!

OK, let's get down to business. Just about everything you'r doing in wrong. Never heat your milk in the microwave, it'll cause all the protein in the milk to cake on the side onf the container that you've got it in. Instead, heat it on the stove (whenever possible) at a low to medium heat and stir it the entire time.

Don't put coffee (even instant) in the frig or freezer as that's a sure way to dry it out and contaminate it with other flavors.

Starbuck$ coffee sucks...there's no need to make "instand" coffee from crap beans that are very over roasted.

The best way to make "instant" coffeee is to brew 1,000's of gallons and build yourself a cooling tower. Spray the brewed coffee from the top of the cooling tower (80 feet tall should just about do the job, this process is called "agglomeration") as the particles of instant coffee were steamed and made sticky so they would clump together. The clumps were then redried by reheating. The result was a product that closer resembled ground coffee but the flavor may have actually been degraded even further by the additional heating cycle.

I hope this helps and/or answers your question.

Now back to my fresh brewed Killer Beans...Nicaraguan Knife Fight this morning.

I just got off the phone with Rconectn, and I think I've converted yet another brother to the wonderful world of Killler Beans!
Too bad thouugh, the 80' tower would have been one hell of a site to see.
