Today is Thanksgiving Day, the day Americans express gratitude for their good fortune by eating one of the biggest meals of the year. Americans as a whole will consume about 10 million tons of turkey this week, along with about 75 million pounds of cranberry sauce.

On October 3, 1789, President George Washington proclaimed the 26th of that November the first national Thanksgiving Day under the Constitution. On October 3, 1863, in the wake of victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln decided to issue a Thanksgiving Proclamation declaring the fourth Thursday in November national Thanksgiving Day. In 1941 Congress made it official.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Doc.

Happy Thanksgiving Doc! Have a nice day in the kitchen, as I know like me, you will be doing all the cooking. I have learned over the years that once the bird is in the oven, it is time to start drinking. Then all the ingrates invited by the Wife won't bother you as much! I hope your meal turns out well. I am about to head into the kitchen now to prepare a 18lb stuffed bird. I hope I don't screw it up!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, don't forget to praise the cook no matter how the dinner tastes. It's a lot of work beleive me!

The first Thanksgivings were three day affairs instead of just the one day.

It has been brought up that a first thanksgiving was really in St. Augustine FL on June 30, 1564 over 50 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock.
However there is some proof that in May 1541, Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and 1,500 men celebrated a Thanksgiving at the Palo Dur Canyon, located in the modern-day Texas Panhandle, after their expedition from Mexico City in search of gold. That would be 80 years before the Pilgrims.

I kinda like this theory, but that is only because I am 'lost' from the Texas Panhandle, where I grew up, and spent many times in the Palo Duro Canyon...
