I remember when one was content with just a ham radio in the car to keep you entertained. Okay, maybe the am tuned to talk radio too.

I've got XM. The commercials and the rambling idiots on channel 13 are making me question why I even have it. XM has a huge potential, all music, no talking. It could be a fully automated process. I don't need to hear advertisements for XM on XM channels. I want to hear only music, no talking whatsoever. Is there really a need for DJs? A few years ago, Dish Network had their music channels set up this way. When I purchased XM, I assumed this is what I could be getting. Might as well stick to FM. At least they finally brought back channel 42. My advice is find somewhere that has both on demo.

Ham Radio? KE6MGB here. ;)

Already knew you were a Ham from a thread we did years ago. My reply was tongue and cheek:D

I am still only a no-code tech... I guess I am waiting for the possable eventual free upgrade and access to the rest of the bands if they do away with part of the code.

Not many on 2M anymore in this area. I heard 34 took the test a year or so ago in the area but none are on the air. My TMV7 mobile seems to just be collecting dust. Good news, I found my HT (IC-T22a) under the seat of the car the other day. Cleaned out the blue/green battery gunk and it works but I quickly remembered the speaker is junk. Nead a replacment HT but with no traffic not sure it is worth the expense.

I mainly only do Skywarn now but no real storms in the past few years.

I have XM in the car, at home and in the office. I prefer Opie and Anthony over Howard Stern, plus I listen to the NASCAR races on XM a lot. The music channels are pretty much the saem, if you consider all the different formats. News channels are all pretty much the same too. With XM you get college basketball too. Plus, if you're a baseball fan, there's MLB. My brother has Sirius and is happy with it though too. XM has the technology and leads the race, so to say. It's really all in who you want to give your money to. I prefer to give mine to XM.
WAIT!!! Um... you "listen" to Nascar races? How's that work exactly... like horses only different? Nothing makes me shake my head in wonder more than some jaggoff on the TV calling this idiocy a "sport" and the drivers "athletes". Oh My God.

Well to be fair anyone who thinks they can hop in a car in full fireproof gear flying 180-200mph around the track with no a/c and the engine right next to there legs with sheet metel for a firewall so you getting that heat plus the sun beating down on you with no power steering and still trying to make aggressive moves on an inclined track had better be an athlete or they’ll be one dead Joe shome real quick. It’s a loose term of athlete I agree but it’s a bit more then hicks driving real fast.

KH6SU here.

I have XM and have noticed them running commercials in every slot they can. Music is still commercial free, but the ones they run are the bitter dregs. Trucker stuff, Lucinda Basset (gawd, her name is now burned in), and how to get poor quickly schemes. The comedy and old time radio channels now carry commercials. They also run their own spots on the Fox channel. Ugh!

Anyone here into HD radio?

Lots of stations in chicago are also broadcasting in a pure digital format. Its like FREE XM and SIRIUS.. UNfortunately only a select few companies are provinfing radios for this new and promising free radio.

I've been wanting to get HD Radio for the past 6 months, however like you said, the selection of radios is very limited.

ya, heard of it, but like you said limited availablilty. the commercial free HD radio stuff won't last long if clear channel and the other huge radio station owners have their way, all they have to do is get BACK into their favorite senator's/congressman's pocket, and some magical bill will be passed at 3am when no one notices. remember when cable tv was first introduced...promises of commercial free television (i know, showing my age there).

Maybe... but not much more.

I have both XM and Sirius. I think it all depends on what you like to listen to. I have noticed that XM is putting commercials on some of the music channels and that pisses me off. I am switching all my radios to Sirius on Jan 1. I like NASCAR so when they leave XM so do I. But the music on Sirius IMO is much better. And the Blue Collar Comedy channel rocks. My 0.02

You my friend have never been to a race. I use to say the same thing.

I have both and really only listen to Sirius. Reason being that the music selection on Sirius is superior to XM. I'll even stream Sirius.com through my surround receiver(via PC) instead of listening to the XM channels on Directv. XM has always had a technology advantage, though, and that is big, depending on how you will use it the most. Raw Dog is hilarious, especially Bruer's show.

It mostly depends on what you want to listen to. Commercial free better music, NFL, Nascar 2007, then Sirius. Baseball, then XM.

Well Rod, its 50-50 as I write this. Has anything been said to sway you one way or another?
