Got a voicemail yesterday on the home answering machine. Some representative from Accudata wants me to attend a focus group for truck owners (I drive an F150)...it takes 2 hours and they pay $100.

Scam or what?

I dunno, never heard of it, but it has the famaliar ring of the high pressure "time-share" sales pitches in Florida.

EDIT:

Don't sign ANYTHING and leave all plastic at home.

Sorry Kelly, not a scam. Its real. My wife and I have done these for new food products, mostly out of curiosity. It was an interesting experience and gave some insight on how these marketing studies work. It was only $50 and we've declined subsequent offers.

Well I called them...it didn't seem like a scam. I asked her about the process, they put you in a room with other truck owners and ask you some questions about trucks..what you like, don't like, would like to see, etc. No personal information and they pay you by check before you leave.

Interesting...

We went through a short interview on the phone and when I said I wasn't likely to purchase a new vehicle for at least 4 years, they dropped me like stone.

There goes my $100!

I worked for part of my undergrad summer "careers" as one of the phone screeners forone of these companies. It is very rare that the payout is worth the pain in the ass that the focus group is.

I do one of these every month (I.T. focus groups).

I make anywhere between $50-$300 per focus group.
Sit there for 2-3 hours and discuss different topics.
Free food and drinks..

The trick here is you have to qualify for the focus group.

Yep, it sounds like your initial instincts that is was a scam were spot on.

I stand corrected in your case. My experiences with marketing focus groups were kind of interesting. Once was plenty, though.

Because of my job I get invited to alot of these studies. You are generally required to sit with ten to fifteen people and answer questions which usually seem pretty random. But you can normally figure out what/who is doing the survey.
After it's over we normally get paid $150.00-$300.00 in cash, sign a reciept & I have never been asked or pressured into anything.
It's actually interesting most of the time.
