Somewhere, out there.
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it in my search this afternoon and thought if it hadn't been discussed in awhile some of the newer members would like to share.

I started smoking (sort of)cigars when I was 16 years old. It all started when I was looking for something besides Red Man chew to take fishing with me. I was at the bait shop and thought that Swishers looked alright for a nice change.

I went on for a couple of years smoking these until one of my good friend's fathers went fishing with us one day. He saw what I was smoking and told me to toss "that turd" and he gifted me an AF (I have no earthly idea what it was, but I remember it was a corona sized cigar). I thought it was good, but it didn't knock my socks off. He gave me 4 more when we got home and told me to enjoy. I did.

Come graduation from HS in 1993, I went to the local shop to get something "good" for me and 2 of my friends to celebrate. I ended up with Royal Jamaican Churchills on his recommendation of something mild but flavorful. I really enjoyed these at the time and went back for more.

From that point on I dabbled here and there and enjoyed buying singles for many years. 2 years ago I decided to stock up and keep a humidor to have some cigars on hand for company and special times. I found this place about 8 months ago and now I have expanded my experiences beyond anything I could ever have imagined. The graciousness and generosity of the BOTLs around here has really blown me away.

Looking back at that fishing trip I'd have to say that it was my first experience with the generosity and camaraderie that exists in the cigar smoking community. I'm sending that man a bomb of appreciation next week with a note thanking him for that gesture. He may not remember it, but I'll never forget it.

Tomorrow is a special day for me and I'll be burning my first Habano. I have the folks here to thank for this opportunity and for expanding my knowledge to the degree it has been expanded. I look forward to learning more and contributing more and more.

That's my story! Anyone else care to share?

Nevermind,I thought this was going to be a Menstrual thread.
I will just keep the starting my period story to myself.

:whistling:
Now that explains a lot of things!!!!

I think I have my story posted in my profile. But I started smoking cigars, as something fun to do instead of just a novelty, when I was playing poker with some friends. My buddy Amede was really into cigars and when we played poker at his house he busted out a cigar for each of us; it was blast.

Then I moved and didn't really have anyone to smoke cigars with. One of my wife's friends smoked the occasional cigar and would give me one when we were out at their cabin. And after awhile I got tired of allways mooching and wanted to bring some cigars, but I didn't know what to bring. Since I'm an IT guy, I went to the internet to do research.

That is when I found the site often reffered to as Satan's site, or the Devil. I started with a bunch of different sample packs and was trying everything under the sun. Then I found CP!!! It has been quite the evolution since then and my knowledge of cigars has grown tremendously. But I still don't know shit.

The best part is that I found a place where people share my hobby. There are a ton of people here that I can learn from, and some I just ignore. I have made some great friends here, both near and far. So, thanks CP!

I too, got my start as a fishing thing. Besides cigars, fly fishing is one of my favorite hobbies/passions. I wanted something to compliment a day out on the river other than a bunch of nasty cigarettes that you have to pack finished butts around in a chest pack as to not pollute the surroundings. I found that a churchill or double corona could go for hours. I was not particular in the beginning. I would buy anything that struck my interest including some flavoreds like Maker's Mark and Kahlua. I became semi-serious about a year ago, and very serious when I joined Cigarsmokers.com in December. Half the shit I used to smoke, I cannot even stand the smell of now. I am truly "hooked" thanks to fly fishing!

I got my start on my 18th birthday (1997 for those who care). About the only "cool" thing to do besides voting was buying tobacco products. I was not about to buy a pack of Marlboros, but cigars seemed appealing.

OpusXKC and I headed up to the newly-opened Outlaw Cigar Company and had a guy named Perry help us pick a few sticks out for "our father's" birthday. We ended up with a Fonseca 5-50 and a Puros Indios Rothschild. I was hooked after that.

Smoking cigars has only gotten better since then as Outlaw picked up more diverse products and my wallet and tastes improved.

BTW, OpusXKC and I are in fact NOT brothers in the biological sense of the word. We are definitely Brothers of the Leaf though!

I'm sending that man a bomb of appreciation next week with a note thanking him for that gesture. He may not remember it, but I'll never forget it.

Great story, LB. I'm glad to see that you are paying it forward (or backwards in this case.) I'm sure he will love it and will remember it well!

As for me, I got started a couple of years ago at weekly/monthly poker games here in Boise. A friend brought cigars and passed them out at each game. It wasn't long before I started enjoying the cigars as much as (if not more than) the poker. I've been hooked since.

How did I start?

Back in high school most of my friends smoked cigarettes, and to fuel there habit, they routinely went to a local Indian Reservation which sold packs without carding you (we were like 15yr). I went with them occasionally, and not wanting to be the odd man out (I hated cigarettes) I picked a few cigarillos (mostly Black Milds and Swisher Sweets) and smoked them while they smoked their ciggs.

However, since entering college I have decided to move up abit. Now I smoke a fine cigar or two whenever I go for one of my aimless drives to nowhere.

Fishing seems to be a popular reason for getting started with cigars.

About a year and a half ago I was given a Padilla cigar by one of my boatmates in the fishing tourney I was in. I enjoyed it very much (after I got over the green feeling :)).

A few months later I decided I wanted to take a box of cigars with me to share with my buddies when we went to Canada on yet another fishing trip. I of course had to sample many cigars to decide exactly what I wanted to bring. I ended up taking a box of Bahia Gold churchills. They were good cigars that were mild enough to be enjoyed by even the neophytes.

After my taste tests and all I decided that a cigar a day (or so) would be OK with me, and the rest is history.

So in conclusion, fishing and cigars, like peaches and cream, were just meant to be combined.

Well, my father always smoked cigars. Nothing fancy, just a 5er pack of some cleopatras from the local grocery store. But anyway, it had always sort of appealed to me because of this.

Then, like everyone else it seems, while fishing I started to take a few with me to enjoy the day. That blossomed and blossomed until I can't end the day without a good closing smoke.

I was in MOS school at NAS Pensacola when the tornadoes hit. We evaced to GA, and there wasn't a damn thing to do. One of my buddies suggested we hit up a smoke shop and buy some cigars. Don't remember what I bought, but I ended up getting 5 more different cigars the next day, along with a travel humidor. Been smoking them ever since.

At the age of 12 I stole a pack of my Dad's Marlboros - that started that bad habit for the next 30 years or so.
4 years later Dad retires from the Navy and we move to Indiana where I learned to grow tobacco. The old farmers would take a leaf right off the plant and wrap it around whatever they were smoking - and of course I did too. One day I remember I got this bright idea to just take a few leaves and roll them - lit that baby up and let me tell you - your throat will call you all sorts of names - right after it agrees to start working again.
Best time of the year would be late fall - after it was cured, ready for stripping - I'd just hang out around the barns every chance I got making my own rough - and I do mean rough cigars. Been hooked on it all every since.

Got started in college at the fraternity I belonged to. Don't remember whether I was trying to impress, fit in, or both. I'd have one every so often after that, but more recently good "hooked" when my brother got me a box of nice sticks... needed a humidor...fell in love with a Michael Dixon... needed to season the humi... needed now to fill the seasoned humi... and the spiral begins.

One thing to say how I started... but what has, in part, kept me interested in this hobby is the friendships and generosity of BOTLs like SLC, Drew, BKC and some folks here that are from another board I was referred from. Everyone watches out for, cares for, and genuinely respects each other (less the asshats). And that's pretty friggin' coooool. :)

Hey mauied welcome to CP dude. I haven't caught you or SLC in chat in awhile. Nice to see you around man.

Started a few months ago with my first sampler order from CI.com And the rest is history.

I started a couple of years ago. I have been friends with Alexgtp and gtphale for about 5 years with car stuff and they started and gave me a stick here and there and pointed me toward the forums after a while.

About four years ago my wife saw me looking at a wooden box at Sam's Club (I am an avid woodworker & will look at just about anything made of wood). She asked me what it was , I said it's a humidor, what ever that is. A couple of months later for Christmas I am the proud owner of a humidor.
It sat on my dresser for 2 years with watches, papework,& some other stuff in it until my daughter went to Bermuda for spring break. She brought me back 6 "Cuban" cigars(not!) for me to keep in my humidor. Then she asks me if I was going to smoke one. I have never smoked a cigar, didn't have lighter, cutter, ashtray, or idea of what end to lite.
The following week I was traveling through NC & saw JR CIgars, figured they could help me out.
Four years, five coolerdors, four more humidors, & thousands of dollars later I would say they have helped me our!
I have been reading the posts on this board, see some folks whose names are familar from another board I belong to, so I decided to quit lurking and start posting. You guys seem to have a nice place here, so I thought I'd join in.
