If you are truely looking for "everyday pours" that won't break the bank then the following should interest you. There are all in the $20 and under range in my area.

McClelland's is in reality 5 yo Morrison Bowmore product. The Highland is Glen Garoich, the Lowland is Auchentoshan and the Islay is Bowmore itself.

Another good budget dram is The Speyburn and it even comes in a metal tube. Lismore is also a decent Highland dram and can sometimes be found for $15 on sale. There are also a 21 and 25 yo version but I've not had them.

Lastly there is a Speyside distillery called Speyside who produces a malt also called Speyside which isn't too widely distributed yet but worth the money if you run across it.

These are true "everyday" drams if you like to have something that often.

Thanks for the information, AVB. I try to keep some scotches around the house for friends. I'll have to look for these to fill the "low-end-of-the-spectrum" needs.

Picked this one up a few months ago from a local grocery store's liquor section. It's a nice drink!

I drank my first glass of scotch this week in celebration for my new job. Some of you might have already seen it in another thread by I had a bottle of McClellands lowland that was very tasty. I think it served well as a first bottle since it was very smooth and had a sweet butterscotch taste to it. It was 19 dollars I believe.

Should I try the highlands next or should I go with another lowlands? Any suggestions on where to go next?

I'd get a different bottle, can't expand your horizons by buying the same thing again.

I'd hate to argue value with someone else's checkbook..

As I'm pretty sure MY values are custom fitted to MY checkbook..

BUT.. on an everyday basis, I havn't found ANY booze that's much under 50$ worth drinking daily..

The Aberlour 15 yr old is an anomaly.. (45$ OTD here)

and the next closest 'value' booze is Balvenie Single Cask 15.. (IMO, to MY tastebuds) @ around 55$..

Either of those beats anything else close, for pure taste.

Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg , Talisker.. all fine names and worth top shelf position.. but NOT SHERRY CASKS..

All for peat lovers, more or less, but try to find a sherried STRONG CHEAP TASTY one.. Ha.

In heaven they have Macallan 18 @ 100 proof, and it's only 25$ a bottle.

edit: Latest price list, it's now $32.50 a bottle in heaven.

I think there are a few to pick from at $40-50 such as:

Bowmore Darkest
Auchentoshan 3 wood
Glenfarclas 12
Ledaig Sherry Finish ($30)

YMMV

eh, AVB, sorry to inform you, Tulsa Oklahoma is at the far end of a series of bottlenecks..

the legal system here requires EVERY BRAND (meaning, every single one, including particular single cask bottleings, and slight changes in proof, and age statement) to have a Bonded Supplier (fill out paperwork & wait) which isn't any trouble to the commercial stuff, but KILLS vintage anything.. just one of those things. I can buy Indian Smokeshop tobacco, pay 0 excise tax, get a STEAL of a deal.. and they don't have anything special at all.

What they do have is cheap. Similar on some scotches, if they're not well known HERE ( Highland Park, Aberlour) then there flat isn't any, at any price, and therefore no local demand. Ain't For Sale!

Cheap stuff yes. 300$ bottles in fancy boxes, yes.. a few.. but decent 75$ booze? Ha! Any halfway decent Chicago or NYC store would have 10x the choices.

I need some nice cheese to go with this whine. :)

Take a trip to Joes Place Fine Wine & Spirits, 1330 East Alameda, Norman Ok. Should be a 90 minutes drive or less. If you go, let me know and I'll have you pick up something for me.

AVB, shoot me a PM of what you are looking for. I might in that area this coming weekend or Monday and could pick it up for you.

I picked up a bottle of the Highland yesterday and finally pulled the cork this evening. I have to say, this is some DAMN TASTEY stuff. I love it over the Woodford Reserve hands down. :) I am currently enjoying is straight, it has a sweet spiciness with a dry finish. I don't think this bottle will last very long. :sign:
