On a couple recent camping trips John @jfields slept in a hammock with a big enough tarp over him to create a complete shelter. I decided I was gong to try it to save the hassle of set up and tear down of a tent. Especially on Sunday morning when I feel like I have been abducted by aliens! Cue comments from @CBoukal 😁

However, I am a very restless sleeper and I sleep on my side which is notoriously difficult in a hammock. I ordered this big hammock and went on my ass numerous times just trying to get in and out; sleeping was out of the question!

So I got the bright idea of anchoring the four corners (see the orange bungies) so it couldn't roll as easily. This was a game changer, it is literally like sleeping on a double bed. If you want to sleep in a hammock, give this a try.

My son uses a hammock exclusively when hiking the AT. I’ve tried but, like you, being a little restless and a side sleeper it never really worked for me. I also realized that once I packed an under quilt, top cover, and tarp for overhead I was carrying more than my one person tent and sleeping bag.

Yeah, the entire process is not decided yet but I am trying to find the right combination. I don't backpack like you do Tom but when John was warm and toasty in his mummy bag on the hammock while I froze in the bed of my truck with air mattress, sleeping bag, blankets, long johns, teddy bear, etc. I figured it was time to give it a try. 😁

Interesting! My hammock is about the size of a large grapefruit when packed away. My sleeping bag already comes along regardless, and the lightweight Kelty tarps hardly take up any room.
Of course, when glamping, it's a large and ungainly two man quilted hammock. 😁

I have a hammock just like that but it wraps me up like a banana. However, Steve @Eqwhipped told me a way to avoid being suffocated and I will be trying that next time out cause I love the how tiny it is.

About 8 years ago, our 2 boys wanted hammocks to sleep on in their room, instead of beds. I'll have to find the pictures, but I got 2 hung up and I think that lasted about a week.
Yeah, I go into a lot of homes that have El Salvadoran's living in them and they have hammocks up inside.

That's funny! My kids called me MacGyver all through their childhood. My best MacGyver was when my son was little and we were going over to my sisters house for a weekend of rabbit hunting. The windshield wipers broke on my car in a downpour with over an hour left to go and my son was devastated because he thought we would miss the hunt.

I found some para-cord in the trunk and made a long loop going over the windshield, through both wipers, and through the front windows which I kept open half an inch, I pulled the loop back and forth to clean the windshield for the rest of the ride. He was the happiest kid in the world when we got there!

I did this at Philmont in NM sleeping under the stars and awoke to a deer eating buds on a bush about three feet from me.

I used to camp in a tent, but several years ago I switched to exclusively camping in a hammock. It's the best sleep I've ever had while camping, although I'm not generally a restless sleeper.
