For Christmas my wife purchased my son the base 4gb XBOX. I'm actually good with that as I would prefer an external hard drive for storage anyway. My question is, I know that I have to use the XBOX compatable external drives. I'm seeing different GB size drives online and wondering if the older 20-60gb hard drives will work with new base models. The only size I can find in stores is the 250gb, but I honestly don't need that much storage to justify the price. Any of you use an external drive? Any issues?

With a little work, yes an older xbox 360's hard drive is useable with the new slim units. They both use SATA ports so it isn't a problem of compatibility just an issue or physically connecting the ports. It is easy to do and this you tube vid will break it down for you.

Enjoy and hope your kid enjoys his gift.

Looks like I was beat to it.

I think I have one if you want it. Not sure what size it is. Let me look around and see what I have.

IMHO your better off just buying the slim xbox with the 250 gb internal drive. Although depending on how much it will be used 4 gb may be enough. Depends mostly on how much dlc you will buy.

Just note that if you use an external storage solution (HDD or thumb drive) you can only use up to 16 gb of the capacity, regardless of how large the drive is.

Honestly my son and I mostly just play sports games, so at most we will have 5-6 games worth of info saved on it. I was thinking an external drive might be better because if I ever get the dreaded RROD, then I would have all of my info saved on a drive I could just plug right back in to a new model and be ready to go again. Either way the 4GB is under the tree already, so an external hard drive is what I'll be getting. Thanks for the help guys.

Leon, thanks for the video. That seems easy enough. If that guy would use needle nose pliers that would go a whole lot easier.
