Went to the Czech Republic (CR) looking for Whiskey and Stogies today.

Regarding Whiskey I found lots of great prices, but ended up going with another 1 ltr. bottle of 12yr. Jameson for 16.99€ (34.99€ in Germany) instead of grabbing a scotch or other whiskey I have never tried (sorry AVB I was out and went with what I know) Next time I'll grab something new and post a review.

But HOLY COW was I shocked by the cost of cigars since the CR was added to the european union and the duty free shops were closed down / converted.

First off they are not allowed to sell singles, so if you want a ISOM or other cigar you have to buy the whole box, and secondly smokes like "Phillies" are also a import item so the price is jacked up.

box of 25 Punch Natural 6.25 x 44 345€ thats $411.86

for Quorum robustos 20 bundle 35€ ($41.78) :0

thats when I stopped looking and asked to be let out of the Humidor.

Now sure as in all European countries you can get ISOM with no problem but are you willing to pay the price?

But on the flip-side cigarettes are 50% less expensive as in Germany.

I just cant figure it out. :(

They won't sell singles, is that law or is it store policy? I don't see the motivation for that.

I always thought Europe was cheaper on Cubans than Asia. Here, a box of Punch Punch would be about $380 (converted) and Cohiba Robustos a whopping $725.

Box of Punch Punch here in Sweden is $340 and RyJ Ex.4 is $310. Come on down to Stockholm for a visit Ekans. Or let me know if you want me to pick up a box for you the next time I come to Helsinki.

Hungary was similarly RIDICULOUSLY expensive -- I'm told due to taxes. Welcome to socialism at its finest.

I'm guessing store, I havent been deeper into the country than the border towns. Its a drunkards paradise, but us Puro lovers are hung out to dry. :sign:

I was in Prague about two years ago, and seem to remember prices being a little high, but not enough to deter me. :)

I guess they've gone up quite a bit since then.

I was in Ireland when they switched to the Euro currency. We went to bed paying in Irish Pounds (punt), and when we woke up the next morning the shops and restaurants were all in Euro. The related point being that quite a few retailers took the opportunity to raise their prices a good bit in hopes that nobody would notice due to the curreny conversion. I travel internationally a lot, and just to make sure I don't get ripped off, I do conversions in my head by habit when I make purchases. When I pointed it out to some folks, they were pretty steamed.

Perhaps that happened a little in CR?

That happened everywhere in Europe :p Some (ALOT of) German merchants replaced the DM with € without changing the price.
