Anyone use one they are happy with? Looking for quality/accuracy over pricing unless I can get both.

Don't care to open the smoker every time I want a reading so a regular dial probe is not what I want. I've found plenty different ones online but was hoping someone may have some experience with one and can point out the pro's and con's.

I have one that works great and was pretty cheap that I got at Target. I can't remember what brand it is though. When I get home I'll check it out and let you know.

I've never used one, so I want to make that clear before continuing.

I've seen these before, but I see more of them that have been returned or at the outlet centers, etc... That is usually a bad sign.

Yea, that's what my research is telling me...... about a 20-30% failure rate on connectivity or just plain not accurate. I just pulled the trigger a few minutes ago on one of these here..... Thermopen. No more guessing on my briskets. :)

Ok.. what time is dinner? :D

Ribs go in the smoker about 10am tomorrow...... dinner somewhere around 4 pm.

I have 5 polder dual probe thermometers. They have a wire cable that you have to run out through the door. They give you a reading of meat & inside of the smoker and are very accurate. What tempature do you cook your briskets to.

So you gave up on a wireless one?

I came home and looked at mine last night, but it doesn't have a brand name anywhere on it, and I couldn't find it online anywhere, so sorry, I'm not gonna be much help.

Prob not so much giving up on them as I'm finding a wanting to "tend" to something. I've cooked with a big cooker most of my life. Charcoal or wood with a side firebox. Several days ago I picked up an electric smoker. This was hard to do. Don't ask me why..... in 30+ years of Q'ing I have never used or wanted to use elec or propane before other than a fish fryer. Anyway, I figured I'd give this electric smoker a try. I stuck some chicken in it figuring if I screwed it up no big deal. Turned it on...set the temp.... added some wood chips... and then sat and stared at it for the next 4 hours. I couldn't believe there was nothing else for me to do. The chicken turned out wonderful and I couldn't tell the difference between it and my wood smoker. I did a brisket in it yesterday and again found myself staring at it..... no fire to tend..... no vents to adjust.... hell, it was boring as hell. What will be great is when we have company over for a cook out. I can tend to guest instead of working the grill.

The brisket came out pretty damn good but I know can be improved. I may have pulled it a little early which was the reasoning for me to find a good temperture probe. Using my wood grill for so long I could "feel" my brisket along with a few sample end cuts to tell when it was ready...... until I've used this smoker for a while I will feel better relying on internal temp and this probe will give me something to do other than stare at the smoker. Another benifit is I get to enjoy my cigars without having to re light them after setting them down to tend the fire or something.

Ribs will be coming out in about an hour and I'm learning not to stare at the smoker..... actually came inside and watched a movie with the wife. No way that would have ever happened on my wood smoker. I may have to go to mass and confess my sins..... a Texan using electric or propane for BBQ is pretty sacrilegious around these parts. :D

you should be ashamed....
