I am going to New York for a student confrence and was wondering if anyone could suggest any good places to get quality cigars. The confrence is near Madison Square Garden. There seems to be a ton on-line but I won't have much free time to look at each one. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

I don't know about a good place to buy cigars in NYC because of the sales tax of 33% or so, but cool places to visit or Nat Sherman's on 5th AVE and 42nd ST. Up a couple of blocks on Fifth AVE is good old J&R Cigars, a nice place to check out. Even if you don't buy cigars there they are two good places to check out. Nat Shermans has a place upstairs where you can sit down and smoke cigars that you buy there. When I go buy I try one or two of theres and sit up there and relax. They are pretty good about recommending something to try based on what you like. J&R has a two floors with things to look at. You can smoke a cigar there but there is no place to sit down, you have to sort walk around: not as nice experience as Nat.

Also, there is a place I think on Sixth Ave in the Fifties somewhere called De La Concha. I believe the address is 1390 Avenue of the Americas (6th Ave). I only have driven by it but have not been in. It looked pretty nice from the outside. All three are within walking distance of each other. I hope this helps.

If you get to check some of these places out it would be fun for you to tell us about your experiences, maybe some pics of the places. Good luck!!! Enjoy NYC

Barclay Rex at 51st and Lexington.
Davidoff of Geneva at 54th and Madison.

These two locations also happen to sell Tatuajes

If you're looking for a nice place to sit down, have a good smoke and a good drink, Club Macanudo is the place to go. Check them out online, clubmacanudo.com. Really nice place. Good food, too. A lot better than I was expecting from a "cigar bar."

A few blocks up from Grand Central on Madison Ave I believe there's a Davidoff.

Lounge upstairs at Nat Sherman's is definitely nice.

edit- Dave beat me to the punch.

These guys have all given you great suggestions for the average tourist to visit.... One of the more local places you might want to try to visit is The Cigar Inn which is located at 1314 First Avenue (Between 70th & 71st). Great "local" place. No alcohol is served but if ya decided to stay and have a smoke or two ya might get to meet some of the "regulars". Great group of guys and a bunch of characters....

Typical NYC prices are in effect in this place, so don't look to buy a whole bunch of stuff.....

Not much to add, except that I often stop in at the Barclay Rex on 42nd that's right near Grand Central when I take the train in to the city.

edited because I take the train. I don't tale it.

That's the shop I go to on a regular basis. Very small though and the prices are high, but the staff is very good.

Thanks for the input everyone. The confrence is not untill April, I posted early because I had no idea people would respond so quickly or be so helpfull when they did. You people are great!!

I live in NY and work in NYC - that's why I buy all my cigars online ;)

Stores in Manhattan do charge an arm and a leg. If you can, go to the cigar shops in the outer boroughs for better pricing. Not much better though. I usually get my regular cigars (gurkhas and Villazon products) online. The shops are mainly for sampling new cigars or special holiday Fuentes.

Well, there are many sites who sell online cigars and cigarettes; you just have to choose cigars of your preference. My friend used to buy cigars from this site may be you want to take a look.

they also have a spot on 53rd and 2nd (address not exact but very very close) with space in the back to sit and smoke and the people there are very nice

on 61st and 2nd ave you have Merchants East cigar bar where you can smoke your own and drink.

let the new york crew know when your coming and hopefully we can all meet up.
