When I was young I wanted to be a racecar driver who owned a candy factory. My wife and I do some road rallies here and there (nothing but firsts ever...), and I enjoy trying to beat my personal speed records every chance I get. If I had the money I'd be doing Gumball and Bullrun sorts of races. Someday...
When I was a little older I wanted to be the first man on Mars. The Challenger disaster didn't dissuade me, but I began to think that some Russian or Chinese guy was going to beat me to it so I eventually gave up on that idea. I'd never have survived all the math that career path would have required anyway.
In college I started out as a pre-med, biology, and psychology triple major. I wanted to be a doctor (likely a psychiatrist) until I discovered that you can't learn organic chemistry solely by studying the night before. I managed to hover above failing for about half the year and then threw in the towel after getting a particularly vicious unsatisfactory progress report. I still have that little slip of paper somewhere.
I changed my major to psychology with a minor in sociology and it was such an incredible relief. I enjoyed what I was learning, but I had no idea what in the hell I was going to do once I finished. So I took a year off from school and then went to law school.
While criminal defense seemed like the most appealing aspect of practice to me, I know enough defense attorneys to know that there's a pretty high rate of all manner of personal problems among the profession. So I figured I'd find some other aspect of law that I'd enjoy.
I didn't, but I did decide about halfway through that I wanted to do jury selection and trial consulting work. I finished law school and puttered around for a few years and eventually got my act together to apply to grad school. I'm currently studying legal psychology and if all goes according to plan, I should have my PhD in a little over a year.
I'm ready for a grown up job (though I'm still enjoying what I'm studying) and my wife has made me promise that I'm done with school, so I'm not too far off from becoming what I want to be when I get a job. I don't particularly want to grow up though.
