What can cause a cigar to be rock hard?

I received a 5 cigar sampler pack of Indian Tabac cigars when I ordered my 25 box of Rocky Patel Sungrowns.

All the cigars in the pack are hard as rock and have horrible draws. And its a shame too since the one I smoked was a Rocky Patel 1990 vintage and probably would have been an excellent smoke with out the problems.

Also what can I do to fix this problem? I don't want to waste the rest of the 3 that I have left (I gave one away).

I've never had this problem before and it was pretty discouraging.

BTW the cigars in the box are just fine.

I guess they saw something that aroused them. :D

Seriously, too tight of a roll and/or very hihg humidity are the two things that come to my mind.

One would hope.

I know I had some RP Vintage 2nds that were too tight when I got them, but the draw eased up after a few weeks in the Humi.

Thanks, I'll move them as far away from the humidifier as possible and let them sit.

Good question. I imagine a hot girl cigar with a skimpy band might do the trick. :D

But seriously.

1) poor construction via bad bunching and overstuffing

2) overhumidification

I find that some particularly plugged smokes I've encountered have the leaves in the bunch lie primarily in a stack like the pages of a book. A good bunch, in my experience (seen in cigars like the Ashtons and Padrons but also plenty of Habanas) has an almost chaotic character that allows some air through even if overhumidified. A tightly "booked" bunch usually results in it going into the compost heap.

Yeah, those 4-hour stiffies (a potential side effect) could be a real bitch. :p

Get a cigar poker and don't worry about it. Do a google search to see who makes and carries Cigar Pokers.

Or just go to Wal-Mart and get a skinny knitting needle. Works like a charm, and only cost about a buck!! :D
