I keep a lot of "old country" holidays and customs, and tonight is Walpurgisnacht . . . so, I leave a sheaf of wheat out for Sleipnir, a slice of buttered bread out for Garm, and light a "bonfire" in the portable firepit from Target . . .

Figured I'd have a nice glass of homebrewed mead and a good cigar out on the patio and watch the old socks and busted tools burn . . . but . . . well, in Northern Europe Walpurgisnacht is known as "Night of the Witches" and I think some of them may have been flying overhead, taking offense at my stogies!

First up was my longtime favorite, a VSG Spellbound. Wouldn't burn! Seriously! Plugged to begin with, had to recut from my initial punch to get draw, and then . . . nuthin. Just flat wouldn't stay lit! ???

About halfway into it, and a whole lighter charge trying to get it going, I gave up and sacrificed it to the bonfire. Went for a San Cristobal Fabuloso, another big favorite, instead. That one seemed to light okay, draw okay . . . then it went wonky. Looked at and almost halfway down, over an inch and a half past the cherry, I see a glowing spot in the wrapper! Some weird kind of void created a tunnel into the body of the cigar and burned through the wrapper there . . . seriously weird. Got the cutter out, cut below it (could still see a small void behind the cut, too) and managed to finish the thing, but . . . damn. I've never had a single construction or burn issue with EITHER of those sticks before, and today . . . twice in one night.

Fortunately, tomorrow's May Day. You know . . . "hooray, hooray, for the first of May! Outdoor shaggin' begins today!"

It can only get better!
