...but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

How often are you guys adding water to your beads?

Lately I have been noticing that I have had to add water almost weekly as Rh readings are dropping almost daily after the humidor stabilizes after recharging them.

I am fairly sure it is not the unit (I have a Mini Aristocrat) and I have not moved the unit.

My hygros are pretty accurate, even if they were off, it is the dropping of the Rh that I am concerned about.

The change in weather can have some effect, but thing have not been that cold here yet in Beantown.

I am fairly sure I read the bead will last indefinitely.

Any thoughts?????

Al

I used to recharge weekly too, until I repaired my desktop and stocked it with my dailies. How do you know to recharge? The beads change from charged translucent to discharged white. When charged, my hygros show a stable 63-65%. As they discharge, RH will drop to 60 - time to recharge.

I usually spray down the beads every 2 days. It's been dipping from 65% to low 60's after a day or so but I'm sure the weather has something to do with it. Then again it's a fairly new cooler (1 month) and the seal is not perfect but tolerable.

Maybe you should double check seal Al. And when did you replace the batteries on the hygro?

I recharge based on visual of the beads and hygro reading. Usually when the hygro is is at 60% the beads are white.

I was thinking of ordering more beads. Ihave one pound in the Mini. Half a pound on each shelf. I also an automatic fan that runs every two hours for ten minutes.

Not sure on the household RH. I will leave a hgro out tonite to check. But how much change can there be in the house? I do run a housewide humidifiying unit that is attached to the furnace.

Before I got my housewide humi my house would drop down to 20% in the winter months, I would have to recharge weekly. Now my house is 40-45%, I maybe recharge every 4-6 weeks.

I found that i am adding more water on a regular basis this time of the year. I think it could have something to do with the heat in the house and the dry cold air. Don't worry to much about it.

Winter time will do that to my humidor as well. I usually last a month in the summer without re-charging, in the winter with the heat on I'm re-charging weekly.

So how do I weather strip my humi again

Is your humi full? The fuller it is the less swings you will have.

The consensus seems to be that the beads need to be recharged more when ambient conditions are drier and/or the seal on your humi is not quite copacetic. I have a variety of conditions in my storage devices; but, I noticed the coolerdor seals the best. I am thinking of getting a humi with a good seal, though. But cigar boxes in a coolerdor seem to work great!

It wont turn into one from me. Not sure why you would think that. I asked a question that seemed to impact others including your self.

Looks like you are right. And that is why I posted, I wanted to see what other members were doing. It just seemed to be a sudden occurence that wasnt happening before.

Thanks for your help. I know what I need to do.

 More specifically, when the drier ambient humidity is introduced into your relative humidity through opening and closing your humidor

I live in AZ and my humi was dipping below 60% due to the very dry winter here...the ambient room humidity was around 20/25%. When I need to, I have put a room humidifier in my office (where my humi is) and it brings the ambient up to 50 or 55%. This makes my humi work well....almost too well sometimes. I seem to recharge about once every week or 2. Filling up the humi to near max definately makes a difference too.

I'll tell you to read the Bill Clinton thread as there is much information in there. Questions to you would be what kind of heat is in use in your house? Do you have a whole house humidifier if it is forced air heating? How close is the humidor to the source of your heating? Do you use a fireplace in your house? Do you have hardwood floors? All of these issues compete for the moisture in your house.

Like I said the Bill Clinton thread does have some important information. Good luck with the humidor.

We don't have a humidifier in our house, and during the winter when the forced air furnace runs, I'm sure the RH in the house drops really low. I like to run my desktop in th 60-62% range, but even so I'm adding water every couple of weeks. I think it's par for the course.....

Good Luck - B.B.S.

As the guys above have stated this is by far the worst time of year for rh stability in any form. The winter months bring drier air in general and then we fire up whatever heating source we have in our home and this dries the air further.

If you live in an area with normally high humidity during the summer months you will notice the cahnge far more than we who live in a dry climate year around. Here in Nevada the humidity is no higher than 25-30% in the summer so it dropping to 20-25% in the winter is no big change. In the north east the change between summer and winter is dramatic and is noticed quickly by our humidors.

Long story short, your humidor will need more moisture this time of year than any other. Re-charging of your Heartfelt Beads will take place more often. Those with active systems will be re-filling their system's tanks more often as well.
