I have acquired an old ice chest from the early 1900's. It has a great seal and I am pondering over whether to turn this into a coolidor. My concern is that it has a metal interior. Will this pose any problems with corrosion or mold? All in all I guess the only way is to try it out.

Regards,
Dan

Sounds like a great idea! I'd love to find an old time "icebox" to turn into a humidor, but they're almost impossible to find. :(

I don't think rust would be a major problem, especially if you're opening it regularly. You could probably coat the interior with urethane varnish before you started using it.

Let us know how it goes.

I wouldn't be concerned with the metal interior.

Get that thing set up!!!

You won't have trouble with corrosion or mold, remember it is an "ice" box and is designed to have water in it.

You might want to add some old cedar cigar boxes as that will help keep the RH steady.

Oh and beads of course. :whistling:

Thanks for the input. I plan to work on this when I can. I will try and post some pictures when it is done.

Just got my beads...only way to go.

I will have to check them out, may be a couple of months before everything is squared away. Meanwhile, I'm uing an old cooler and some oasis foam.

Dan

This isn't a bad idea at all! I see old vintage coolers and the like all the time at auctions, swap meets and farm shows down here in southern MN! Perhaps I should start picking them up, setting them up as coolidors and selling them here!

Hmmmmm...

You may have found a niche. Even my wife likes my idea. I just want to find time to get my own set up.

Let us know what you decide! I really like the idea of a vertical cooler. Wanted to do Vern's setup, but it looks like either it never really got off the ground, or he's just swamped. Never got a response to my email about it. :(

Well, that idea didn't last long. A friend of mine came over and I showed him my new find. He mentioned that his wife had been looking for one of these. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse (cash). So I guess I'll be sticking with the igloo until I can find another. I hope to buy some special smokes with the $$$. :D

What about an old steamer trunk, has anyone tried to make a humi out of that?

Dan
