I was thinking of getting a vinotemp and converting it to a humidor as opposed to buying an aristocrat as I just don't want to spend that much money. Can anyone give me some pointers as to model, what modifications I'll need to make, and any other pertinent info?

Thanks,

Steven

Your welcome :D

I got the 28 bottle, thermoelectric cooler model(28TED?).
It's just terrific!

I use about 1.5 pounds of beads, 2 drawers and one shelf.
Holds about 7 boxes and a couple hundred(est.) in the drawers.

You'll love it.

I got mine directly from the manufacturer/importer in Los
Angeles.

The owner of Vinotemp also smokes cigars and posted a "Sale"
on the Cigar Asylum 'retailer' message board, for fellow
BOTLs, last February. $199 delivered, anywhere in the CONUS.
To my knowledge, this deal hasn't been offered again.

I love my Vino! It seals well, is quiet when running, and
stores a lot of cigars. I bought a couple of ChasDen's
drawers, and a shelf, and put in about 1.25 lbs. of beads.
Currently have 7 or 8 boxes of my favs, and 300 singles
in it.

I spent so much money on cigars last year, that my New Year
resolution for 2010 is not to buy any cigars until July 4th.
Somewhat successful, so far.

I have 2 Vinos and love them

28ct with 2 CPU fans, about 3.5lbs of beads and a singles drawer from Chas..........I keep it at 63-65* and about 64%RH..........works like a charm...........the more boxes you have in it, the more steady the temp and RH will be in my experience

WOW, was the $199 for the 28 bottle? Do you know how to get in touch with him now?

Just noticed that Compact Appliance has a pretty good offer on the Edgestar 28 Wine Coolers @ $199.75 with free shipping.
I am not associated with the retailer or manufacturer just passing on a good offer.

Thanks StogieSteve, that seems like a very nice deal. Lowest I could get the price to was $211 but even that is a good deal. This may be my next purchase.

I found the thread on Cigar Asylum.

Here's the info:

Price was $179 delivered, not $199

The poster's name was Alvin Patrick, and he claimed to be a new BOTL
and owner of Vinotemp

The contact info is...
"To order, visit www.vinotemp.com or call 800 777 8466".

The offer expired on February 14, 2009.

Yes it is the 28 bottle model. I love it!
Make sure to get the thermoelectric cooling model VT28TEDS.

They also make regular refrigeration models, but they don't
work as well for cigars. Not sure of the details on the
downside, but compressor models are not generally used as
humidors.

I ended up ordering the Edgestar...got it for $201 delivered. Amazing delivery, I ordered on Monday and it arrived Thursday. My father in law is a master woodworker so were going to build some shelves and drawers. I know beads are highly recommended but do you guys think I should do beads over a oasis? If beads how much for a 28 bottle fridge?

Congrats! I've got the same cooler and it works great. I've got about 2 lbs of 65% beads with most of that sitting at the bottom of the unit. There are 1, 2 and 4oz tubes sitting in different spots throughout the trays and drawers. Everything's holding steady at 64-65 degrees/65% RH since late last summer when I moved it out of the gym (90 degrees without the AC) and into the bedroom, which won't get any warmer than 75-80 degrees.
I think you'll be very happy with your purchase.

One pound of beads is supposed to handle up to 5 cubic feet of space.
My Vinotemp measures about 3 cu. ft. I use about 1.25 lbs. of beads,
with a 1 oz. tube in each drawer. So that's about 1.5 lbs, total.
I put 1/2# beads in a shallow tray on the top shelf, the other 1/2#
in a similar tray on the bottom. Don't forget to plug the drain hole.

The rh stays between 65% and 70%, with very little maintenance.

My drawers have glass tops, so that the fan doesn't circulate too much
cool/dry air directly over the cigars. I bought an Oust fan, but
haven't needed to use it yet. I unplugged the cooler for the winter.
Humidity still stays very constant, with occasional maintenance.

You're gonna love your new cooler!
