I brought up the idea of upgrading my two small desktop humidors to a Vinotemp with the Wife this evening.... and she wasn't opposed to it! She doesn't mind my collecting and occasional cigar smoking, as long as I'm not blowing all of our expendable income on them, or spending too much time away from the family.

Time to start reading over the pinned wine cooler guide thread.

I'll save you the trouble. This is the one to get: http://www.vinotemp.com/View.aspx/2885/28-Bottle-Thermoelectric-Wine-Cooler

Shop around for the best price. I got the 18 bottle version, love it, but wish it was bigger. For the price, the 18 was hard to beat ($230). Still, I wish I bought the 28.

+1 I also went a size smaller and regret it.

I think the 28 bottle may be a little too big for me right now. I'm looking to keep the wife happy (ie. lower prices are better) and I think I've found a place locally that has Vinotemp coolers for a ridiculously low price. The website was rather vague and I'm going to call or email them for some details. They might even be refurbished if they're really the price they have listed... which, if functioning fine is ok with me. Less money on a vinotemp = more money for cigars!

I&P, how many boxes would you estimate your unit to hold? I know you mentioned a Partagas box didn't fit one way but did another, but aside from that one what do you think you could fit in there? With, or without racks?

Excuse the mess, I'm waiting on a couple of boxes and am doing some rearranging in there.

I took a quick picture with my iPhone camera (not the new one yet, so the quality is terrible). The bottom has a tin pie pan full of beads, with a little ramp I made from a plastic folder to funnel the condensation back to the beads. I threw in a couple of extra bags in the bottom for good measure. The bead tube on top is the largest one from Heartfelt, full of 65%. The bead tray is a 70%, I bought it before I knew I liked 65% better. It's so small it won't make a difference though.

The tray on top is from my desktop humidor (now empty). It's not clear at the back of the unit, there's a little room back there. The two Cohiba boxes are pulled forward, they could sit two deep. Keep things away from the back as much as you can to avoid water getting on your sticks. The PSD4 box on the bottom is pulled forward too. There isn't a whole lot of room behind it. I think that you could barely fit two side-by-side in there. Hardly any room on top. I'll probably pull out that second-from-the-top shelf when the new boxes arrive. I wish I would have purchased the 28, but it was about $160 more expensive after shipping to Hawaii, and I thought it would scare the wife. This one sits in my office and is perfect ... just a bit small.

So, to wrap up, you could fit four Cohiba boxes on that shelf, a couple of PSD4 boxes on the bottom shelf, a couple more on the second-from-the-top, and then a tray of singles on the very top. You could take out all of the trays except the bottom and fit more, of course. Be sure to clean it out properly before you put your cigars in it. Mine took about 3 days of washing with baking soda and fresh water, and leaving it on the back lawn in the sun and fresh air. You'll know when it's ready.

Might I suggest the EdgeStar 28 at more than $100 cheaper shipped. It does the exact same thing as the Vino, and can sometimes be found even cheaper than the current price. By the time I was done...I picked mine up for about $165 shipped.

I still had "some room" in this picture, which is nonexistent now.

I just bought THIS model last week. FedEx tracking shows it should be here Tuesday... :whistling:

After Bing cashback, total was about $185 shipped. Look forward to seeing if I got what I paid for.

Klip,

Who made your shelves and drawers?

Any idea of the lifespan of the edgestar? I may think of getting one of those for my next if they are that cheap, even after putting all of the drawers in.

After looking at the pictures on the link you provided, it sure looks like the units this guy has for sale are Edgestar and not Vinotemp. Maybe they did the common pracitce of using brand names interchangably, like Kleenex and Xerox. Regardless, if I end up picking up one locally, I won't do it sight unseen. Where did you get such a nice drawer setup for yours?? I love the look and definitely have more singles than boxes right now.

ets: Search is my friend.... found your other thread :p

Chuck aka Chasidor My drawers are solid cedar but he has many options... FYI...I'd stay away from doing alot of single 1" drawers as they only hold a single layer of cigars. Where the 3" drawer can stack cigars 4 layers deep, holding upto/more 100 cigars per drawer.

Those shelves look really good. I will order some when I upgrade to a bigger Vinotemp. For now, I mostly store mine in boxes so the shelves aren't needed. I only have 20 singles or so, and that tray at the top works for them. Great looking shelves though ... so nice.

Klipsch,
Did you opt for the slotted bottom drawers, or glass top?

I actually had ordered the glass top drawers, but the order got messed up and I received slotted bottoms instead. Chuck was ready to take them back right away, but I decided to keep what I got and I'm really glad I did. The glass would have reduced the storage capacity and I have more singles than boxes. I suspect the glass would have chopped one layer of sticks off of the 3" drawers. Though...I do think that the solid bottom glass top drawers would serve better to isolate one line of cigars from another, because it would really be like having larger closed boxes of cigars, instead of everything being in the same big box...if that makes sense. I've just recently started using the thin cedar sheets that come in some cigar boxes to separate/isolate some singles from others, if neither of the cigars are cello'd. I'm still new to all of this...I'm learning as I go along. :)

Also...I ordered an extra shelf & single drawer (not seen in the pic above) just to give me more versatility. That way as storage needs change I can adapt it like a set of Lego's. Better to have the pieces on hand than have to wait 4-6 weeks to receive them...ya know?

Another vote for the EdgeStar 28. I bought one for about that price and it has worked great so far.

Turns out the website this guy has is out of date and no longer have anything in the price range or size I'm interested in. His inventory was on clearance and apparently cigar smokers have cleared out everything. The hunt continues!
