Viaje Oro

Size : Chico - 5.5 X 44
Wrapper : Nicaragua Criollo
Binder : Nicaragua
Filler : Nicaragua

It was a Sunday morning and I was enjoying my morning trip to coffee shop. As I was standing in line, I noticed a very uniquely designed t-shirt, worn by the guy in front of me. When I asked him about it, he replied that he had picked it up at the local Tinder Box. He ranted and raved so much about this cigar that I couldn't resist the temptation to go and pick one up for myself.

This first image is (obviously) of the unlit Viaje:

After a quick trip to my local cigar shop, the first thing I noticed, well before I even made it to the cash register, was how good this stogie smelled. Despite only having smoked a few dozen different cigars in my life, I have always had a real fondness for the smell of tobacco and this was clearly quality product! At his recommendation, I elected to borrow the salesman's punch cutter, as well as his obviously very expensive Dupont lighter. Immediately upon taking my first puff, I realized why the guy in the coffee shop was so amped about it. Despite my repeated temptation to inhale it, it was perfectly enjoyable to just take long, deep draws and savor the gradually richening flavors.

This picture is after about 5 minutes of the journey:

The flavor was distinct and strong yet not overpowering. During the first 5 to 10 minutes, it only got better. While I tend to prefer a bit of a medium smoke, this one toed the line between medium and full bodied so perfectly that it never became too strong for me.

In addition to the flavor, I kept close track (and photographed) the burn throughout the experience. It was nearly perfect throughout. Even after taking long pauses between draws, the ash burned evenly with minimal effort.

Coming down the homestretch of the Viaje experience, the best word I can come up with for the flavor and draw is creamy. The smoothness of the taste was consistent and pleasant at every step of the way. As I approached the band, I had no intention of putting this cigar out.

As my first Viaje experience drew nearer to a close, I continued encountering slightly different tastes but was never disappointed. Even as my fingers became in danger of getting burnt, the smoke remained at a pleasant temperature and perfectly smokable.

As the experience wrapped up, I had trouble accepting that it was time to drop this newfound surprise into the ashtray. In this final picture, you get perhaps the best view of one aspect of this cigar I have not yet mentioned: the wrapper. This dark, oily and consistent wrapper is obviously a major contributor to how well this cigar burned throughout as well as its great taste.

There is no question I will pick up a box of these boys the next time I find the urge to have a smoke. I hope you find the review helpful.

Very nice review!

Why don't you post an intro in the appropriate section and stick around? :)

Good review and nice pictures. These are good smokes, but I've had draw issues with the smaller sizes (Delgado 5.5x42). Four out of the five pack I bought had really tight draws. I may need to move to a larger ring gauge on these and give 'em another try. :)

The Delgado is now the Chico. To much confusion between the Delgado(5.5x42) and Delicado(6x50.)
