Hey everyone, i'm in college and just getting into cigars...i am on a pretty tight budget making only 7-something an hour so i was just wondering what cheap cigars might look good to me and my budget, i know alot of my friends smoke cigars made by swisher (i know those are cheap and you all probably hate them, but i'm just saying they sure are popular, especially with my age group). Thanks for all your help, any input is appreciated.

Howdy! Many of the guys (and gals) would like to get to know you, so adding more info in your BIO might help.

On that note, my very first box of cigars were Baccarats. I still think they are an excellent cigar for the buck. Here is a link:

The Newbie Sampler is also an excellent way to find out what you like, and what you do not. Good luck and happy smokin'. :)

Hey there!
I'm still pretty new as well, and on a budget!
My first box purchase was the Padron 2000. I'm not sure what your budget is... but, IMO, these are a great smoke for a great price!!!
I would also second the newbie sampler, these guys will hook you up, and you get a great chance to try a bunch of diiferent smokes!
Also, I would look here. I have tried the Flor Ybor City #85, and they're damn good as well. I have heard that the Tampa Sweetheart bundles are good as well.

Hope this helps!
David

stcards,

The newbie sampler is a way to get some great smokes at a great price from some experienced members.

In a few words....you sign up to participate, when it's your turn you're assigned a FOG (fuggin old guy) and you message back and forth about what you want to try. They'll put together a nice sampler for the price you agree on.

Read through this thread for the info....clickie

ok cool, thanks. not to be a pain :( , but i was just wondering what you all think of those swisher cigars? just would like to have some experienced smokers opinions.

Swisher sweets? Grabs chairs and throws it across room

SWISHER SWEETS!!!!!!

I will refrain from further destroying my home. But if you're serious about some great cigars at a good price I highly recommend the AF Short Story at a little over $100 a box they're a bargin!

I hope you're being a smart ass.

Swishers only come up on this board as a joke. I do not recall ever seing a thread about them or what anyone thinks of them. I personally have never had one, and have no idea what they are like. Punch Rothschilds in the Maduro Maduro are a great buy. $120 or so for a box of 50. Just over $2 a stick. They are great out of the box and age well. Stick to the online vendors. They have the best prices and many have huge selections. Welcome to the world of good cigars. It is time to leave the Swishers behind.

Yeah, what he said.

Ssshhhh...don't tell anyone (swiveling head and looking around the internet for eavesdroppers...) but I still occasionally smoke a "SS" when I'm out on the boat. They aren't that bad.

It's like everything else...the more you learn and the more different kinds of cigars you try, the more you'll appreciate all the differences in cigars. Some you'll love, some you'll hate...some you'll just feel "meh" about...that's ok.

I've tossed $20 cigars because they just didn't do it for me. Some of my favorite cigars cost less than $4...a few under $2!

Swisher Sweets aren't that bad and lots of guys here have probably smoked them at some point. We've smoked other stuff since then and have found cigars that we like better. For sure we don't all like the same stuff. One man's "dog rocket" (a bad cigar) is another man's favorite "yard-gar". Each to his own.

Try some other cigars....I think you'll find lots of choices. You may be surprised to find many cigars that aren't that much more money and are much tastier. A nice cigar deserves some attention. Your smoking may become more refined as your choice of smokes changes. That doesn't mean you can't still enjoy an inexpensive stick while you are mowing the lawn or pulling weeds or something.

The expensive cigars get all the attention on the forums, but there are lots of really good inexpensive cigars out there. Smoke what you like!

Just because I like filet mignon doesn't mean I still don't enjoy the occasional Big Mac.

Hello,

Some of the best cheap cigars I've smoked would be from the Consuegra (AKA Connies) line. Although it might be a bit "hit and miss" to find a blend that you like. I'd recommend a bundle of the 30's or the 73's. At $30 or less for a bundle of 25 shipped, (if you order on the 1st of the month from the above linked site they are a good smoke at a heck of a price.

If the Connies are too expensive for your college budget, I've heard good things about the Trinidad Y Cia bundles from Tarheels. I've not tried them however, at $12 a bundle with a money back guarantee, you can't go too wrong, IMO.

If you have a bit more to spend, Padron's can be had starting at about $55 a box. Or another nice smoke for about the same money as the Padrons, is the Onyx Reserve line.

Best of luck in your search and welcome to CP!

Those are some GREAT suggestions for inexpensive smokes, Breweister....
Hold off buying swisher sweets for a few weeks, and save up if you have to for the Consuegras. I was as skeptic until someone handed me one on the golf course...I knew it wasn't an Opus or some other ultra-premium, but I rememebr thinking it was a solid enough cigar to smoke and enjoy some flavors. I've heard good things about the TyC smokes, too, though I have also not had them...but that price can't be beat! I'd be willing to bet you the price of a bundle they beat the pants off swisher sweets!

Padron 2000s cannot be beat for a great, quality cigar for the price.
Also, try the Fuente 858s. That's what I started out with 7 years ago when I started smoking.

I'm in the same situation as you: trying to develop a sense for what cigars are good. I've had a few packs of swishers, and they're ok for a quick smoke, but if you want the ultimate cheap manufactured cigars, it's backwoods every time. 8 for 5 bucks. They're mild, slightly sweet, and a good quick smoke if you're on a budget. Some may frown upon them, but I haven't gotten into the expensive type cigars yet...supposed to go to a smokeshop tomorrow though, so we'll see if that changes.

wow thanks for all the tips, like i said before i'm fairly new to the cigar world, i'm just looking to get involved in cigars and the community here. i'll definitley check out the Trinidad Y Cia and/or the consuguera (sp).

Just out of curiousity, what are the main differences between hand made and machine made cigars, besides the fact that one is made by a machine, i.e. are the machine made filled with 'junk' or other non tobacco products, and if so are they more unhealthy than other cigars. Thanks again to everyone for all the help.

$100 a box for any cigar is pretty pricy for a college student who is just getting started. I won't even pay that much for a box of cigars.

Keeping in mind that taste is subjective, and one man's favorite cigar could be another man's most foul tasting cigar, there are several bundled and boxed, very good cigars that can be had for $40 and under.

Mayorga, Mantequilla, and the aforementioned Consuegras, all available at JR Cigars. I would also highly recommend the Newbie Sampler.

You might want to try www.Famous-Smoke.com and www.CigarsInternational.com. They each have small samplers of cigars anywhere from 5 to 20 cigars in size. You can get a good sample of some of the best cigars around for a moderate price. Order their catalogs to see what they have.

But again, your best bet is to go with the Newbie Trade Sampler.

A couple good suggestions Herfin BigDog, and speaking of Cigars International... this is a heck of a deal for $15.00. And it is still available.

Drew Estate La Vieja Habana Blue band. You can usually find em for about $2.50 each for the big'n and much cheaper by the box. Great beginner cigar for a good price.

And by beginner cigar I mean I like it
