AGHHHHHHHHH.

Why are cellphone providers so hard to work with?

I currently have Nextel. I have been using them for 5 yrs. And currently under no contract with them but have a great plan.

I finally found a phone that i like and is within budget.

So I call NEXTEL directly and ask them what I needed to do in order to "UPGRADE"

Well they told me in order to qualify for that price I would need to sign a 2 yr contract..(which is fine and i get to keep my current plan and rates). I was allright lets do it.

He than proceeds to tell me..
it is a 35.oo activation/transfer fee.. I was like WTF? I have been a customer for over 5 yrs.. cant it be waived.. and he says no Im sorry.. so to add insult to injury they said also you have to pay for shipping and handling..which was an additional $10.oo.. WTF!!! I also have to pay for shipping..and i get no freebies like a charger DAMN THEM!!

I guess customer loyalty means nothing to these greedy SOB's!

So i guess I am back to square one.

Go back to the Nextel store..and take them up on their offer.
They would only charge me 15.oo for activation/transfer fee.
give me a free car charger and ear piece..and not charge me for shipping..LOL!!

FOCKIN NEXTEL!!!

Unfortunately I wont be able to switch providers..so that is not an option right now for me.

But didn't you just save a bunch of money on your car insurance :sign:

If my Nextel was not provided for me free I would not use them. Too many reception problems. I talked to my boss on direct connect from Yuma, Arizona but there are parts on my county that I get no service. :angry2:

Here in the Pacific Northwest I use Verizon, and have been happy with it. My $00.02 is that around here it doesn't seem like ANY of them are "way better" than any of the others....

Alex - not sure why you "can't" switch providers, but the heads up is that most of 'em will pay any charges you incur when you switch if you pester them. Once they smell blood (= new contract) they have a ton of options if you push a little. And, of course, you can also keep you phone # now when you switch.

As soon as I can get the wife's kids off our family plan, our bill will go back to normal.... :D

Regards - B.B.S.

I use Cingular and am very happy with it. The rollover feature is awesome not to mention the free m2m. Seems like 50% of people that I talk to on my cell are cingular customers so the calls are free. :D

I hate cell phones. I have one and barely use it (Verizon) they ALL suck in Connecticut because of the landscape and not enough towers so there are so many dropped calls and dead spots, it's ridiculous.

The do-gooders passed a cell phone ban in the legislature this year so you can no longer use them (unless you have a hands free set up) while driving your car.

Nextel sucks just as bad as the rest of them around here.

Ya know, the world made it up until the early 1990s WITHOUT these goddam things so I really see little use for them anyway.

I've had verizon forever, my whole family does. They are rated #1 in customer satisfaction.

I love them

That sucks.

I'd ask for their retention department.

Also check out fatwallet.com and scour the internet for the nextel deals...there may be a key phrase you have to mention, web page to use, etc. that is not widely known.

All it all it's OK because they sponsor the highest series in NASCAR. Bad deals are a small price to pay to allow guys named Dale and Carl go car racin on Sundays.

I feel your pain bro! I have had Sprint for the past 3 years with one phone. Now that the wife and I want to add another phone . .HOLD ON!!! BREAK OUT THE WALLET!! What happened to the "family plan", add a line for $10??? Suddenly my monthly bill of $40 has to jump to $70 . .the whole damn thing is a racket!!
But its still a tiny smidge cheaper than 2 accounts, so you shrug and shovel it out . .BASTIDS I say!! All BASTIDS!!

You should ask to speak to a supervisor and tell them "If I'm already active and I'm going to sign a new 2 year contract, you should waive the fee." A regular Customer service rep won't give you the time of day!

Also, I THINK all nextels use the same charger, so you should be able to use your old one for the new phone.

Good Luck

I have U.S. Cellular, my biggest complaint other than price is that they, along with various other providers, have the phone manufactures "turn off or eliminate" Factory options, LIke Bluetooth, so that you have to use their Crap (easy edge) to transfer files from your phone to computer. :angry2: But they, cellular providers, will gladly tell you that the phone is "Bluetooth enabled" they just won't tell you what they have disabled. :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

Alex, I've had nextel for about 10 years and recently found myself in the same situation as you. I wanted to upgrade my phone but wasn't willing to pay the full retail and wasn't about to sign a 2 year agreement.

If the Nextel service is in your name here's what you want to do..... call Nextel and ask for their Customer Retention Department. Don't let anyone else try to solve your issue. Once you get to a customer retention person tell them that you are a 5 year customer with Nextel and recently you found you needed to upgrade your old phone..... tell them you walked into a Nextel store recently and they wanted to charge you all kind of crazy fee's plus have you sign a 2 year contract that you are not willing to do. Now the hook.... tell them that after the less than stellar customer service you received from the store you found yourself checking into other phone services and that you now have 2 companies wanting to give you a free phone (make sure to insist its like the one you're trying to get from nextel) to switch to their service. You can tell them something like the only catch you can see from the other service is that they want you to sign a one year contract..... not that you want to but the deal they are offering has you considering switching. Keep telling them that you really want to stay with Nextel but under the current circumstances...... yada yada yada. Be nice through the whole conversation but firm in your decision to switch without some kind of concession.

I recently wanted to upgrade to their i860 phone and after doing pretty much as I stated above I was given 25% off of the phone plus they credited my account one month of service (about $110 for me) plus they had a $50 rebate on the phone that I was able to score on as well. While it wasn't exactly free I was able to get the $400 phone for under $150. YMMV Good luck.

be glad you have the options you do... here in Alaska cell phone providers are local ones, not the big national ones. No nextel, verizon and such. Supposedly they are coming here, but not soon enough. My nephew is here visiting and he has one of them and he cannot get crap for service here. About the only big one here now is Cellular One, and I'm not impressed with them AT ALL. Waiting for my contract to end so I can drop them.

Personally, I'd rather not even have one, but this day and age it's almost needed. It pays for itself just in the overtime calls I get on it, but it's still nothing more than a loooooong electronic leash. next one I'm giving my wife the wrong number for it so she'll quit calling me to tell me the sun is out! :p

ALEX, i have verizon and no dropped calls or bad reception, you live in the chicagoland area as i do, trust me verizon around here is the best!

Had Cellular One before, they SUCK. Talk about organization and billing errors, every other month I had to dispute roaming fees for my "home" area.
