Sunday was a great day around the Hogan house, so I took advantage of the opportunity to smoke two cigars in one day – a rare treat for me.
First up was the Padilla Obsidian. I received two of these in trade with a member of another form, and one more as a part of a sampler that was gifted to me for my birthday. I mixed up these two batches, so this smoke was sitting in the humi for two or three weeks depending on which batch it came from. The stick looked incredible - dark and rich - and the first thing I picked up on was the aroma of dark chocolate when I sniffed the foot. I fired this baby up and was greeted with a tight draw. I’ve read the other reviews about this smoke having draw issues and problems with the burn going out. While I wasn’t getting much smoke on the draw, I loved the tastes I was getting. It was all maduro and chocolate sweetness with just a touch of spice. As mentioned, this smoke cooled off quickly, and it took a couple of puffs to get it going. I let it sit a little too long at one point and it went out, but I was able to light it right back up and keep smoking. I would recommend this cigar, especially if you are one of those people who takes frequent puffs which will keep this one from going out.
Then, a few hours and a hearty steak dinner later, I reached for an Oliva Serie V Maduro. I bought a sample pack of these, and a friend and I are splitting a box. I’ve been eager to try these sticks since I am such a maduro fan. Awesome blast of pepper to start this stick off. Then the flavors mellowed as the maduro really took over, leaving a crisp creamy finish that I was loving. As I smoked into the second third I took of the band and realized something was missing. Not long after that it hit me…the nic buzz that I always get smoking Oliva. This one sprung up on me. There I was enjoying a creamy medium-body smoke when all of a sudden it became a full-body smoke in the final third. It knocked me on my arse rather quickly, and the already great cigar took on a fantastic new profile that has made this one of my current favorites. Definitely recommend this one to all experienced smokers.
