Tupperdor Question

Hey guys how is everyone?
Currently I have two large tupperdor holding about 80 cigars and one medium holding about 45. My dilemma is that I live in Brooklyn NY and when June comes around I'm going to be in real trouble because it's gonna get hot and humid fast. I was thinking thought if I get a wine cooler big enough to hold the tupperware just to regulate the temperature. Will that work? Possible pitfalls? Thanks a lot for the help guys.

Hey man! Welcome to Cigar Pass! Please make sure you take the time to make a presentation in the "Introduce yourself here" section of the forum. It will help us knowing you better, abd is a must here when you signup.

If you're going to buy a wine cooler, transform it straight into a wineador, do a search here there is alot of info. Also, you could just buy a cooler, search for coolerdor, there is alot of info as well....

Thanks for letting me know Gianni just did the intro. As far as wineador and coolerdor go I'm not really looking into making a wineador just want to use a wine cooler to control the temperature .

Then I believe it should work, providing two things:

- that it is NOT always working and plugged in because the constant cooling of the wineador will suck the humidity of whatever is in there. That raises the problem of a timer to power it on and off, and the fact that when it powers back on again it will probably be set on the lowest temp setting.... I believe this has been covered many times in threads about wineadors....

- that your tupperwares are VERY airtight so that they are able to contain their humidity. That also means that every tupperdor should have it´s own humidifying device (like a boveda pack) and hygrometer. Might want to get those with a gasket and clamps on every 4 side, they are pretty air tight....

Also, I would check to see what range of temperature can your wine fridge work at. Usually, cigars want 70% rh and 70 degrees temperature.

Honestly, I have never had this problem because even though summers are pretty hot here, the Cabinet being in my basement where temperatures never go that high helps alot. Other people might want to jump in on that one, but that may work......

In any case, if you are looking for a wine cooler, look for a thermoelectric one, not a compressor one. Even for the wine itself, the constant temp variations and the vibration of the compressor are not good for the wine if you want to keep some bottles long term..

Lol sad to say I don't have the luxury of a basement since I live in a little apt. Each tupperdor thought is a Rubbermaid with the four clasps on each end, plus each one has it's own share of heartfelt beads. So they are pretty air tight. Knowing this you don't think I shouldn't have a problem with Condensation or problem with the internal humidity of each tupperware right? All I'm really looking to do is get the temperature to stay at an even 66 or 67 degrees. Btw I keep my cigars at 65 if that is of any use.

People use wine coolers to keep the temperature low during summer months. If you can fit your tupperdors inside, more power to you! I do not believe you would have condensation problems, as those usually occur when there are temperature differences between surfaces (think about a cold beer on a hot summer night)

You should be able to keep your current humidification device, unless you add more cigars then you may think of adding more beads. You could also try putting beads and a hygrometer inside a tupperware, inside the wine cooler, without cigars, and see how it reacts... Know that some cigar cabinets use the same cooling units as thermoelectric wine coolers in their setup, so it's nothing new. Also, alot of guys use a wine cooler as a humidor, so why not? One other option would be to buy a small humidor and put it inside your wine cooler, as it would have the benefit of spanish cedar "regulating" your changes in humidity, actinrbas a buffer (has to be well seasoned first of course).

Also make sure you remove the plastic smell in the interior of the wine cooler before use. You can do baking soda wash and drying it in the sun, I have also read of the vinegar/water wash with a couple rinse cycles....

Thanks a lot for all the help brother. You have been really helpful. When I get situated with this set up I'm considering making the wine cooler into a wineador so that is the next step. Again I can't thank you enough.

You can achieve a similar effect by just adding the cigars you do have in some old cedar boxes you have (or get from the local cigar shop) and keeping your cigars in them inside the winecooler.
