what do you think the pros and cons are for each? what is better for storing a mid sized amount of cigars like 20-50 cheaper and more effectivley? thanks

For a mid size amount of cigars.... you are ok to use a tupperdore or something similar..... You would probably be better off getting yourself a small cooler and some beads from heartfelt.com..... probably be more user friendly that a piece of tupperware

and you'll soon outgrow a tuppador if you hang around here long!

Truer words have never been spoken... :p

Get bigger than you think you need.

how long would a pound of beads last me?? and what size tube thing should i get?

Beads last indefinitely...as long as they are properly cared for (used distilled water.)

if you figure the prices quickly a midsized humidor can go for 60? buying a pound of beads $29 + 1 ounce tube for 10 dollars plus buying a hygrometer for $15+ plus shipping ect the humidor might be a lil more im still not sure what i want to go with

Hi Hobbes,

If you are in desperate need of storage right away, by all means get what is available and will meet your immediate needs. Whether that is a Tupperdor or a humidor makes little difference as you are starting out. If you need something RIGHT NOW, go with the plasticware since it will not need to be seasoned as a cedar-lined humi would.

I would say don't worry about going too small. If you do need a bigger one at some time, you can always use the starter unit as a quarantine humi (for beetles, etc) or as a step-down/up for adjustments of stick you intend to smoke in the near future.

Best of luck to you,

Wilkey

tupperware(for storing cigars without box):

Pros: -cheap

Cons:
- it does not really look good, storing your cigars in a
plastik-coffin
- you might get problems with humidity and the smell of
plastik
-you might get mouldy cigars

proper humidor (desktop size)

pros
- not always expensive
- nice smell of spanisch
cedar
-easy to humidify
-looks good
-higher waf (womans acceptance faktor  )
- perfectly desingned for cigars
-etc

cons:
- too small for boxes

If you are only smoking lose cigars you will be best with a proper humidor. The first one i bought (approx. 75 cigars) costed around 50$
You will have it for the rest of your live. And always consider how much you pay for your cigars and in which case of what quality you put it... Wrong storage can quickly destroy all your cigars, and then you might lose more than the 30 $ you saved on the humidor...

I know that a cooler is very popular as a humidor in this forum, there is nothing to say against that, as long the cigars are kept in their boxes.

For the first days it is surely better to keep the cigars in a tupperbox, instead of letting them dry out, but then buy a proper humidor.
Or build one yourself... But that is a noter story

I just wanted to provide a counterpoint to flowminators remarks. While I agree with his positive comments about "real" humidors, I think the assessment of risk with regard to humidity control, off-smells and molding are not limited to or necessarily characteristic of plastic containers.

I can't debate the aesthetics of plasticware as it is certainly not as impressive as a high-gloss wooden humi. The choice of storage/display containers is very much a personal preference and as long as it is properly maintained either variety has the potential to serve your particular needs well.

My problem is that every time I accumulate enough cash to buy a "real" humidor, I spend it on another box to go inside my big plastic tub instead. :D

If you open the box you will loose humidity. In a plastic box you only humidify the air and the cigars.
But in a wooden Humidor the wood works like a "buffer". So you have a more stabel humidity when opening a box.
I have seen several tupperware "Humidors" and most cigars got musty and mouldy...
Of course cigars will also mould in an humidor when they are soaken and the humidor is getting too warm. But even with the proper parameters (Temp. humidity)
it is more risky in a plastik box...
And as i said, a well crafted humidor must not neccesaryly be very expensive!
This is an ivestment you will not regret!
And i did not say anything against the large coolerdors, as long as they are conditioned properly! But for storing lose cigars a plastic box is not sufficient!

EDIT: corrected some mistakes

well thank you ginseng and flowminator however how long do beads last will this last for for a long time?? anyone have good links to cheap humidors or anyone selling thier old one?

also for storage for now... i have the cigars in a old ryj box.. thiers some peice of wood in thier my firend gave me i dont know what kind of wood or waht purpose also i put a sponge with some distlled water is taht fine for now?

flowminator,

I see your point about the cedar lining being a humidity buffer. That's precisely the reason why most folks who use tupper or igloodors use pieces to line the inside.

You can buy nice big sheets of Spanish cedar or go cheap (but effective) like me. ;)

hobbes1,

You just have to be careful about getting the wood wet. Do you have room to put the sponge in a dish of some sort? Even a little formed piece of foil would work.

Dont spoil your cigars and buy a humidor quickly! But for the transition time it will be ok, althoug it is not an optimal solution...
If you have the humidor do not forget to condition the humidor before putting cigars in! Otherwise the cigars will dry out...

flowminator listed some pretty good "pros" about tupperdor style humidors BUT I strongly disagree with the notion that cigars are more prone to mold in a plastic humi vs. a wooden one and I also disagree with the "problems with humidity." A proper humidification scheme will work just fine in either a fancy wooden humidor and a tuperdor/coolerdor.

I've NEVER had a problem with plastic smell, mold or humidification in my coolerdors.

@ Ginseng

I have a similar box for my cigarBOXES. I bought an old wooden army transportation box. I painted it in a new color and lined it with massive cedar (1.5cm)! Perfect and cheap for longtime storage with boxes!

In a cooler you store boxes, you have the cigarboxes to serve as a reservoir, so there is not really a need for additional wood.
And if the cigars are kept in their boxes, there is less risk for mouldy cigars!

But again, for LOSE cigars those plastic containers are definetly not the best solution!

I dont want to say your coolerdoors are crap  but if you want to store loneley cigars i can not recommend this method!
They are really good for aging in boxes...
I hope you understand what i am trying to tell you...
