Hey everyone. In June we are going to Aruba for our Honeymoon  and of course, I would like to take some sticks with me to enjoy on the beach or wherever there may be that kodak moment.

I haven't been out of the country in a long time and things have changed. Anything I should be concerned about going into Aruba?

How about the reverse, if I happen upon some sticks while there and bring them back in to U.S. (as long as they are not ISOMS) :whistling:

Thanks!

William

I'm sure there are the usual customs limitations on goods being brought back into the US from Aruba, usually something like one or two litres per person of alcohol and 100 cigars, of non-cuban origin.

You can check the customs website, which is something like customs.gov for specific info on the quantities.

And of course it is against the law to purchase any goods of cuban origin or to even accept gifts of goods of cuban origin, regardless of where you are. So technically you cannot purchase a cuban cigar and smoke it even if you are out of the country.

I have never had any issues traveling with my own cigars in my own tuppedor which I keep with me in my carry-on flight bag. Do not carry a lighter, torch, matches etc. you will loose em ;)

Smoke all the cubans you want when your overseas....

It is against the law to bring countreband into the USA.

Enjoy your vacation :D :p ;)

I can't believe your are going to Aruba for your honeymoon after what happened with the Natalie Holloway Case!

I can't believe Natalie Holloway did the risky behaviors she did BY HERSELF at age 18 in a place she was not familiar with...

I agree! You should honeymoon in a country without any crime!

Thanks! I will certainly try to get my hands on some Cubans while there. If there, why not?

I may employ tuppedor this time. I had a soft bag humidor and I was nervous about them in my carryon.

I am able to put my lighter/cutter in my check in luggage with no problems. I have flown twice this way, though both times, I got that pretty little sticker on my bag saying they went through it....

And here I thought I was the only one who felt that someone other than the Arubans should have some responsibility for her actions!

I can't believe I am going either. I got a steal of a deal for the vacation ;) :)

George, never been to Jamaica.....look forward to it one day though.

Enjoy Aruba. it is one of my favorite places.
Be careful buying cigars, there are more fakes than real. LCDH is pricey, but the woman who is always there is nice, and was quite helpful. It is in one of the "malls" in Oranjestad (sp?).

And as for the whole crime thing (not sure if Pegleg was serious or not), yes, if you have an 18 year old girl with you, let her know that getting wasted in clubs and then leaving with strangers to have casual sex is not a good idea while on vacation. If this is new to her...something might be wrong at home. Not that what happened is right, one should be able to have wasted casusal sex without getting killed (hell, college would have been one dangerous place if you couldn't)...but still...

Take some Arturo Fuente bands down with you and reband yourself. ;) Also, a couple things about Aruba, there is a nice cigar shop in the shopping center/strip mall on the main drag. It is downstairs in the back. Good selection and average prices. Upstairs there are a couple of bars and restaurants. Across the street is the swap shop where yu can get decent souveneirs. At that strip mall, on the terrace having a drink, if you face the ocean, look right. That first stop light, if you make a left there you can go up the street and there is a Carlos and CHarlies which is fun at night. Before you get there, on the right hand side, there is a restaurant on the second floor. Just go up the stairs. Good fish there.

Stay away from the cigar shop next to the Cruise Ship terminal. They do have legit cuban at decent prices. They will also bait and switch, taking your Cubans in the back to wrap up and mail to your house. Then when you get them, they are fakes. Also, my shipmate also bought fake Monte's there.

You can take a short cab ride from the main city to the Hooters. There you can catch different sports via satellite. When my buddies and I went there, it was dead. So we sat way in the back away from everybody, and smoked som Montecristo EL's while watching the game and hitting on the waitresses.

Like everywhere else, just be smart. Don't get in a cab if there is 2 people up front. Take cabs, and not local's using their vehicle as a cab, put your ID and credit card in your front pocket seperate from your wallet, dark roads, etc... While the Holloway case is a rare exception, there is generally low rates of violent crime. Usually your local punks snatching and grabbing, drugs, etc... Have fun!

It is down stairs in the back of the big mall right on the water. Decent selection. You can get good deals on the minor marques, but the money makers are always a bit pricey. My buddy bought a box of Tubed cigars for $100. I think they were H. Upmann - Coronas Major.

Take any major city in the US and compare the crime to Aruba. Per capita, Aruba is a safe haven in comparison.
Would you say, I am not going to New York or Chicago or LA because a crime was commited in one of these places?
On the other hand, if you are talking about a moral issue and don't want to support Aruba, that is an entirely different scenario.

You have a great vacation, the ABC Islands are just beautiful. The color of the water is mind boggling, some of the best diving in the world.

Emo, Thanks a million for the tips! I am going to jot your tips down so when we go we know what to look for.

Along the lines of Cubanos, any brands I should look for (I'm an FNG)? I want to separate the good sticks from the turds.

Secondly, any easy way to identify fakes if they try the bait and switch?

thanks. I agree. I feel that Aruba is much safer than lets say, NYC, LA or Philly. Try walking down Broad St. or the Badlands in Philly and see how far you get.

Heck, try walking downtown Allentown (my neck of the woods), 7th and Chew at night and see if you get far....

I would definitely take my chances in Aruba anytime :D

I can't believe Natalie Holloway did the risky behaviors she did BY HERSELF at age 18 in a place she was not familiar with...

Granted she made some poor decisions, I still don't think it's appropriate to blame the victim here.

This is a hot issue, no doubt. There are going to be different camps with different opinions, mine included. In the interest of keeping somewhat on topic, we will switch gears before it gets a little messy :whistling:

Lets get back to talking about why we are all here, CIGARS! :D

One of my newbiness questions still stands. Which brands of ISOMs should I look for to avoid the dog turds or any other hard to finds in the US?

Just go to the LCDH in the mall and you will be taken care of. As far as what lines to try, I dunno what you like. I say buy 6 different lines, all in your favorite size. Then you know which each line is like. So when you get back state side you know what to trade, buy in the trading forum. Here are the 6 lines I recommend to try:

Fonseca - A milder cigar with pretty decent flavor
RyJ - I don't car for them, but many newbs do
Monte - Best selling brand
Partagas - Another favorite, bolder in flavor than Monte
Bolivar - Bold flavor, more earthy flavors
Cohiba - the Flagship brand

Been to Aruba once. Pre-cigar smoking time. Niceplace. Passed on a star sapphire ring there that I kick myself in the ass over to this day.

Like most places Id bring enough sticks with you to get you through the stay and also to place on top of the good stuff if you bring any back in your box.

I bought a 15 stick otterbox for the last cruise and it is worth the extra money IMHO. By the time you start stuffing that puppy with sticks to go down, or more expensive sticks to bring back, you'll appreciate the bomb proof container. $25 is cheap compared to having them crushed or dried to dust.

No one gave my otterbox a second look coming back in. Went right through the carryon xray and I picked it up on the other side.

I agree that you shouldnt completely blame her for what happened. But american teenagers and college kids are notoriously stupid when it comes to behavior in other countries (as well as in the US half the time). You may not be doing anything actually wrong, but if you put yourself in a dangerous situation, you share the responsibility. I personally choose to stay away from drunken casual sex anywhere, because there are just too many potential problems, even in a nice safe college town.

Thanks again Emo, I jotted them down with the rest of the tips. As far as what I like, tell you the truth, don't know yet. My palette is wide open to try different ones.

I will be looking at travelling humidors or just make a quick tuppedor. Where did you get the otterbox, local or online?
