Travel Humidor/Cases - Csonka?

So between my travel time with work, daughter, etc, I've found myself carrying cigars around more than I ever have. Previously, I used to carry a 15 stick zippered cedar travel humidor in my briefcase, but I don't carry a briefcase too much anymore, and its cumbersome to carry around. I'm looking for a good 3-4 stick case where a cigar would be safe for an extended period of time (a week or more maybe?).

I've come across the Csonka products (I wonder if Larry has anything to do with these?); they seem very well priced, are cedar lined, perfect size (1.7"x4"x8") and come fully equipped with a 'humidification system' (looks like its gel), pipettes for a reserve of PG, hydrogometer, cutter, matches, etc.

Here it is on Amazon, but I've seen it for noticably less ($30-40)

Anybody have one of these? Any input on other items out there?

Wow, that thing looks nifty. I'm currently using an airtight tupperware-style container with a cheap floral foam humidifier as a traveldor, and this looks like a good buy if anyone could comment on the quality of the product.

My sentiments exactly. Amazon reviews are 4 & 5 Star on it, but, well, its Amazon. I need reassurance from a BOTL ;D

Have you considered the Cigar Caddy? I have a few, and they work great.

I've seen those, and they look to be a great product, just a little 'ugly'. This is one of those things that I want to balance form and function, and the novelty of the Csonka having everything built in, and being cedar (as opposed to foam) are big pluses for me. This is less for physical protection, more for condition protection.

I appreciate the input xRanger!!

If you wanted to go up in size, you could go with something like this Xikar. It also works good. I dont have pics of mine, but check the link below.

Damn, that thing is pretty slick! I also have a plane Jane Cigar Caddy but it works perfectly so I'm happy.

I usually use my Cigar Caddy also, especially with all the traveling I have been doing. The Xikar makes a nice desktop humi at work though.

That is VERY slick and quite attractive, but no, I don't want to go up in size. I have something similarly sized and shaped, with the same stick profile humidifier, that holds twenty 48-50 ring churchills, fully made of cedar, covered in leather with a zipper, and served me well in my briefcase. When I need to go back to something that size, I'm definitely picking one of these up.

Thanks again though xRanger!!!

I got a 15 stick cigar caddy from Rod and now find myself bringing it with me all the time. It's basically I'll throw an assortment of cigars that I might like to smoke while I'm out and about. More recently, my overflow has been finding itself in the case until there's room in a humi.

I picked one up at my B&M about two months ago after a string of breaking my cigars too and from work. Since then I love it. If you keep the "humidification system" filled up it will usually hold between 60 and 70 percent RH. I don't go anywhere with out it anymore. The cutter isn't the greatest I have used but it works and is definitely nice to have in case of an emergency.

Hope this is helpful!

What humidification device does everyone use in their traveldor? Sorry if I'm hijacking the topic a little.

Here you go.

First off you should not worry about humidity in a travel compartment like the Caddy. The cigars should stay in good condition for weeks, as long as its sealed. I am not an expert in this but, I think you are putting to much thought into this. "Dont judge a book by its cover" Same idea here, to me does not matter what I am carrying it in, if its safe and dependable, its the cigars inside that matter.

edit to add: try C-bid as well, you can get great deals on there.

I've always got a 65% Boveda or two around the house. I just press it up against one end of my caddy and close it.

I'm glad you posed that question, and to further that, it seems like while 70% was once the standard, more and more BOTLs are leaning the 65% way.

Are the 65% humidifiers the real way to go??

It's personal preference, but I find that my cigars smoke better around the 63-69% range and the 65% beads seem to do the job very well. When I travel though I don't really care what the RH is. I use a drymistat tube in my Caddy and really don't know what the RH inside of it is.

Thats what i've been reading. I put some recent stuff in my box and went from 68% to 62% overnight. I used to get worried at anything below 65%; not so much anymore with all the knowledge and experience offered here at CP!!

I tried the Drymistat Tube in my 18ct Caddy, and it seriously over humidified my sticks. The hydrometer was sitting at 75% when I got to the hotel after my flight. Went to the 65% Heartfelt Beads after that in a tube, and have never looked back.

I have one of the humidification pillows in my caddy, though I'm thinking about getting one of the small heartfelt humidification sheets and cutting it up and taping it to one of the walls. That way it will take up practically no space and give all the benefits of the beads. I can just drip some water on it, or throw it in the coolerdor for a while to recharge.
