It’s cold out this morning, temps right at 40F and the rain has the humidity high making it feel even colder. I debated on whether I wanted to go out and attempt a smoke, but of course figured I could bundle up good and make out okay. I picked out another of the cigars Nick (TrickNick) sent and reading up on it found it should be quite a treat, or at least I hoped it would be. The cigar is made from Top Shelf Cigar Co., this particular brand with Jim Cronin’s signature on the front, blended by none other than Don Pepin Garcia himself. The cigar had very good construction with a Colorado shade wrapper that was very thin, brittle, and no oils to be seen, nice triple cap on top, and one prominent vein running the length. It felt light in the hand making me think it may be underfilled, however with the cap punched I find a perfect draw with taste of straightforward tobacco.
The foot lights easily and as I go to take a couple puffs, the wrapper at the cap sticks to my lip and tears a bit, however I’m able to press it back down okay. After getting a small amount of ash forming on the foot, I take a couple quick puffs and then a long draw to find a mild to almost medium strength smoke coming through. However, the body was very full and heavy on the palate with an spice that that hit the back of the tongue and throat perfectly. Flavors weren’t incredibly rich, but simply really good straightforward tobacco that was vegetal in taste, maybe a hint of citrus.
As the burn progressed, it got to one side slightly, but corrected on its own with a very compact whitish ash forming. Through the first third and heading into the halfway mark, the smoke turned to a good medium strength, flowing well through the perfect draw with the body still full, heavy, and smooth on the palate with excellent spice in the nose. Flavors are not complex at all, but consistently good, straightforward tobacco, really good I might add with the same on the finish.
Since my fingers were getting a bit numb from the cold, I ended the cigar as the fire got close to the band. This cigar wasn’t anything fancy or complex, but simply a damn good smoke that I very much enjoyed. It looks like these aren’t available any longer as it shows discontinued on the site, however I would probably have to try out some of the coronas if they were. Luckily Nick sent two! Much appreciate sending my friend!
