Todays cigar experience

Well, I just finished a grueling week working the midnights shift, and I felt the absolute need to relax with a good cigar and a good bottle of wine. Being on a budget for the moment I went for cheap yet highly rated items. While reading CA I came across a review for the Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Rothchilde(Honduras). The words "Gloriously oily, with a rich dark-brown color and good performance" caught my eye at once. Also the $2.90 price tag. So in the middle of my work week I bought one of those and a bottle of 2003 Novy Syrah and continued to stare at them throughout the week and dream of my off days.

Well today my off days came. I just finished work at 6:30 this morning. At about 4:00, after eating a good flat bread ham and cheese sandwich, I lit up the cigar and opened the wine. The cigar looked nice, Fat and short with a nice oily wrapper. I lit it with a match very carefully and noticed some problems right away. This cigar just wasn't going to burn right. I exercised a lot of patience with it but there is no way it was going to straighten out. And the taste? Well it pretty much tasted like nothing, just muted Honduran flavors. Well at this point I figured this cigar had been kept in too high of a humidity. I struggled with it about half way and finally decided I had to pitch it. Being that I have been working midnights with limited sleep I was pretty grumpy, and this cigar wasn't helping that. so I went back to the humidor and grabbed a Padron delicias natural, another cheap cigar. Well this cigar burned well but was boring me to death, I figured I might as well be smoking something from the gas station, a bit dramatic I know, but like I said I was in a bad mood. At least the wine was excellent.

Well, at about half way the cigar started getting my attention, and by the last third I was really enjoying it. Too bad this cigar took so long getting going, and its so small that its kind of a case of too little too late. But the cigar experience didn't turn out so bad.

Some people just smoke cigars as a companion while they are fishing, hunting or doing something else that is taking up the majority of their attention, not me. When I smoke a cigar I take it seriously, it's the focus of what I'm doing and I want to be wowed. Spending all this money on "cheap" cigars just seems to be a waste of time for me. I think I would be better off if I just spent the extra money for cigars I know I like and just smoked a couple times a week. Oh well, you cant win them all I guess.

Sorry to hear the first didn't work out for ya.
On the other hand, consider it a part of discovering the world of cigars.
Just like the wine you bought cigars come in every shape, size, pricerange, etc... And sometimes you have to smoke a few you don't like to get to some you do.
Case in point, now ya know you do not like the first one.
And you also found one that started out not too cool, but got better.

All I can say is rinse and repeat.

also, welcome to CP!

Good point Sir-smokes-alot, you're very wise. The problem is I don't know whether I liked the first one or not as I think I got a bad specimen. Well, I guess I will try it again since it only cost $3. :)

Good idea - never judge a cigar based on just smoking one. Unless it's a Swisher. Or White Owl. Or flavored.

or delicious.... :)

My advice is to but 5 packs. Then try to get in a regular routine on when you smoke them. Also keep notes. For example, you get a 5 pack of Camacho Diplomas. Smoke the first one within 3 days. The second one after a month, the 3rd at 3 months, the 4th at 6 months, and the last at 1 year. By doing this you give the cigar a chance to develop into what it will finally be. You'll find some smoke great fresh and lose flavor steadily. Some are the opposite, they get better w/ age. Some need time to dry out to bur right. You get the point.

Great advice

Hey Emodx that sounds like a great experiment. Maybe a hair impractical but a great idea none the less.

Patience, brother, the key to enhancing the "experiencia que fuma"

Fyodor, I feel your pain. I have been on midnights for a couple of years and it makes it difficult to find the proper smoking time. I enjoy coming home in the morning and having a glass of a nice red or a couple fingers of rum and a good smoke. I was given the advice to smoke less but smoke better a while back and found it to be great advice. I have gifted most all of my cheep "bs" cigars and never looked back. There are a few cheeper cigars that I do smoke and enjoy but I sure spent a pile of money finding them.

this is why you should smoke some cigars when youre not trying to relax. :D so when you really want enjoy a great smoke you wont be disappointed. :( when i want to relax and enjoy a very nice smoke i dont take chances on new cigars, i always reach for something tried and true. barring the occasional dud i keep what i know i like on hand at all times, at least one, that way theres no guesswork. knowing you have limited free time, maybe you could do your experimenting when you have a little free time, and arent relying on the cigar to end a stressful week :D

 get some rest, start fresh, smoke happy ;)
