I'm planning on buying the wife a Tivo for Christmas. She tapes every reality show known to man, and has tapes stacked up but never has time to watch them.

The Comcasts nazis want an arm and a leg for their DVR and you have to subscribe to digital cable, which we don't need. Tivo works with regular cable.

They have a $100 rebate right now. I was also thinking about the lifetime subscription as well..

Any thoughts on these?

Tivo Rocks man. I wouldn't get the life time though. It's the life time for that one unit sooo if you upgrade you will have to get a new tivo.

I originally purchased my 60hr Tivo 3 years ago. I switched to Time Warner's DVR in July. Going with your cable company has some positives. You can record 2 things at the same time if you leave it on one of the channels you are recording or you can record one thing while you watch another. With Tivo you only have one input so you must watch what you are recording unless you have a 2nd cable connection going into the Tivo unit. Tivo monthly service is $12.95 while TWC DVR Service is $8.95. Also, a Tivo unit willl cost you $100-$200 including your rebate while TWC offers their unit for the same price as a standard box (no additional charge)

I prefer the DVR Service provided from my cable service over Tivo, however if you do go with Tive I recommend getting the Lifetime Subscription as it will pay for itself in 2 years or so

Thanks!

I'm definitely going to ask some questions when I go out to look at them this weekend....

Definitely get the lifetime subscription. If your Tivo dies they will transfer the sub to another unit. Also get the biggest HD you can afford as it fills up fast!

Comcast wants an arm and a leg??? How much more were they charging?\
But than again I also have the digital package..and the HD programming.

I just ordered the Dual Tuner DVR for HDTV and it is only 5.oo more a month.

DO you still have to pay a monthly fee with TIVO?

There is a monthy fee only if you don't buy the lifetime subscription.

Digital service is $80 a month, plus another $12 for the DVR. I'm already paying a boatload for regular cable and broadband internet. These bloodsuckers (Comcast) are greedy. It's cheaper to go with Tivo then Comcast

Screw Cable then. Look into Dish Network or DirectTV. Right now we get 180+ channels including locals, all digital, 3 rooms hooked into it, and the dvr service for 50-60 dollars. It may be worth it to get rid of the "cable pig"

Lemme go ahead and ruin in for ya....
We LOVE Tivo. With a new baby in the house, we can't always sit down when our favorite shows are on - Tivo takes care of that for us. It's also fun to have it record some of the old TV Land shows for those late night feedings. If your TV has Coax cable & RCA jacks, you can record one program on your tivo hooked up via RCA jacks, then just tune your TV to whatever else you want to watch. Most "modern" tv's have RCA hookups, so that shouldn't be a problem.

If you do go with Tivo, DEFINATELY get the lifetime - it's soooooo worth it.

The prob with dish on any kind is NO broadband options, they have some BS ISP, but NOT BROADBAND....I would go with the Tivo Leebo..Hey that rhymes!! :D :D

Wascal that was TFF!!!! :D :D

If you have sbc in your area you can get a combo with their DSL for 20 bucks a month for a year and dish network. Im sure they would knock money if you get a combination of their services.

Well, I can't justify the expense of digital cable....plus, the last thing I need is more tv channels!!

I have broadband and modern tv, Tivo will be the best option for what I already have.

Also, Dave your post was actually helpful. The first part was unecessary however and I'm sure that won't help your popularity around here. I just thought you would like to know that.
;)

I figured you, with your superior intellect would see the humor in my opening line. Sorry if anyone else found it offensive

I'm glad you found the rest enlightening. I figured after the "you can only watch one channel" post, I'd share that little trick I learned. We actually set our TV up that way to watch PiP. One picture Tivo (digital cable), one non-Tivo (basic cable). We just split the cable line right before it goes ot the digital cable box. It works extremely well for us, and I figured it should work just as well for anyone else with multiple inputs on their TV. Just make sure you have a TV/Video1 button on your remote for easy switching.
Hey look, I contributed something to the board :whistling: :whistling: :whistling:

My cable provider scrambles basic cable so you must have a cable box in order to get any cable channels

That sucks, Mike. As long as your TV or VCR is cable ready, no need for a cable box where I am.

Well, I think it's a done deal! Might get the $300 (60 hour) set. I get a decent rebate on it....

Yea, I love Tivo. Get the largest hard drive you can as others have mentioned. Mines a first generation and only has 30 hours. Even using the DVD recorder to keep it cleaned up that 30 hours still fills WAY too fast. Mine is with a directTV reciever and I really like the whole set up a lot.
