Today it was a La GLoria Cubana figurado of some sort. About 7" long and maybe a 50 guage smoke. At first, it didn't smell too bad on pre-light. A bit loose feeling though. When lit, the draw was WAY too loose for my taste. :(

As the cigar progressed, the taste never changed. Never really got better and never got worse. Just below average, in my opinion. Actually, it really didn't have a taste. (my taste buds aren't as refined as some here) :p

Anyway, with about 2.5" left, out it went. I feel I gave it ample opportunity to change my mind and it didn't! Won't ever smoke one again.

The reason I post this is because I have a number of singles in my cooler and occassionally get one out and try it. The last couple have been real duds! Some of them are cigars people rave about and others are just avarage priced smokes. I think I'm gonna stick to the "favorites" and find something to do with the rest! I don't know!

Anyone else have this happen?! Feel free to talk amongst yourselves! :whistling:

PS: I almost have 1000 posts! F'in A!!!!! I'm "almost" important!!!! :p

PPS: Edited for the "PS" portion.

I don't have this happen too often as I don't smoke too many really good cigars. This make the average cigars taste a helluva lot better my friend. LOL But I smell whatcha steppin in.

Right ther with ya brother. I'm at the point where I'm hesitant to smoke anything I don't alrealy know I'm gonna like. The days of me trying out different cigars are over. Which leaves me with quite a problem because everytime I go into the humi I usually pick out the same sticks. For domestics its Padrons and La Lunas, and for Habanos its Cohiba, Bolivar, and Rafael Gonzalez. At least all the others are getting some good age on them.

I hear ya! What's up with that? Lately, I've been tossing more cigars than I've been smoking. During this last week, I've torched up 4 cigars. One was a good smoker, the other 3 were pretty much duds. The good one was a little Padron I got in a trade. The other one that was ok, was a Perdomo, big cigar for me, but burned just ok. The last two, a small Punch, dark wrapper and my old standby, a Quintera Brevas were totally plugged, I smoked about 5 puffs off of each and then tossed them.

Several weeks ago, I lit a this big Edicion de Silvio (sp?) that I got in a trade and it actually blew up very slowly as I was smoking it. It got this huge bulge in the middle that grew and grew until it finally split and started to fall apart. I tossed it. Later, I saw them in the store and discovered it's a $20 cigar! Ouch!

Clearly, they are over-humidified. I used a 50/50 PG/water solution for the first year or so and then switched to 65% beads about 4 months ago. The coolidor runs about 63% pretty consistently. Even after months in there, some of my cigars still seem to be too wet.

I stopped by a local cigar shop, bought a few and had a little time to kill, so I figured I would have a beer and smoke a small one right there. It was so wet, I could barely get it lit and it produced very little smoke. The owner walked by and asked me how I was doing....my face all caved in from sucking on the damp towel of a cigar he sold me and so little smoke around me I could have been sitting in the public library. "Fine" I said....ha, ha, ha

It's kind of weird, some cigars are really good, other ones are terrible. Even the same cigars from the same box vary widely in construction and retained humidity. I used to soldier through them (I paid $xx for this damn cigar, I'm smokin' it!). Now, I give it a few puffs, let it rest a minute, a few more puffs and it better be showing me it's a keeper or in the trash it's going!

Life is too short to smoke bad cigars!

Every now and then, I pull out a cigar that I got from somewhere (Thanks Bill and Oscar!) with a yellowed cellophane wrapper. I pull off the wrapper and the cigar is firm, with a bit of a dry feel. The test draw after the punch is just perfect....clear, with just enough resistance to make it interesting. The pre-light taste gets me smacking my lips. It lights easily and from the first puff billows huge clouds of tasty smoke. It doesn't go out, burns slowly and evenly, lasts for at least an hour or so and finally at about the 1/2 inch point, goes out quietly in the ashtray.....aaahhhhhh, cigar nirvana!

That's what keeps me coming back!

Cheers,
Joe

Are the beads right next to the meter? If so, that will be the driest part of your cooler. In my fridge, I place the beads in pantyhose, and put them in 3 different places. Perhaps the container your beads are in doesn't allow for good moisture exchange?

I know my local guy's shop is anywhere between %72-%74 RH. When I put a new box in the fridge, within 24 hours I can see my meter spike form %65 up to %72. Being that is it is summer time and muggy here doesn't help. From expierience, it takes a minimum of 3 months for my corona sized cigars to start smoking good, and longer for the Robustos.

Thanks for the info. The beads are in a open plastic food container (no lid). Good idea about the panty hose and spreading them around the coolerdor. I think I'll try that. I bought 1 lb of beads for my coolerdor which is actually a plastic container about the same size as a large cooler.

We've had the house open here until last month. Now we are running the A/C constantly...it will be on until at least Oct 1(I live near Orlando, FL). My cigars face higher humidity in the winter and lower in the summer so maybe it's just a seasonal thing although I haven't noticed too much fluctuation on the meter.

I got a bunch of wooden cigar boxes and have the cigars in them hoping that would keep the humidity from big swings. Mostly the cigars are individually cellophaned too.

I'll make a point of putting the meter in away from the beads. I usually just toss it in last...haven't been too picky about exactly where it goes.

Appreciate the tips.

Joe
